What's Up at Washington Square
February 9, 2023
SkillsUSA & HOSA
Student organizations are one way we get to showcase our students and the hard work they do to practice program-specific skills in areas of interest.
As our students are learning in programs that can lead to future career opportunities, they practice skills they use in those fields. It is common in our halls to see EMT students performing CPR, construction students sweating pipes or running electrical, or firefighting, CSI and law enforcement running through scenario-based practice.
The competition season is kicking off, and some of our SkillsUSA students will compete this week. If you are interested, talk to your teachers to see how you can get involved next year.
Good luck to all of those competing this year!

Student Prospects
Students participating in our EmPWR day, where all programs get to showcase some of the skills and equipment they will work with each day.
EmPWR Day
Students get a chance to spend a day using tools and equipment in programs of interest.
8th Grade Tours
All middle schools in the district are invited to tour our building, and see what each program has to offer.
Open House
This event allows parents and students to visit our building to get information and ask questions about our programs.
It is so rewarding to see the enthusiasm of our future students here at Washington Square as they learn about our building and its programs during the 8th grade tours, open house, and our EmPWR days.
National Technical Honor Society
Congratulations to all the parents and students who qualified for the National Technical Honor Society! You should be proud of your accomplishments, outstanding work in your classes, dedication to your grades, and leadership in the building.
Don’t forget to complete the application process by Friday, February 16, 2024, to enroll for this honor and qualify for all the benefits that NTHS brings.

Student Highlight
Advanced Construction Class
Mr. Cooper wanted to acknowledge the entire advanced construction class as the construction Student Highlight.
Students have been working hard to work on and learn many different jobs. The advanced class builds the annual tiny home, using practical skills, and recreating what the job will look like for any student who may work for a developer and build houses. The students also had the opportunity to build a house structure in the scenario room. This structure will help students as firefighters practice search and rescue in a structure fire. Law enforcement officers can practice how to secure a scene, and CSI students can collect evidence and run through mock crime scenarios.
The progress these students are making is incredible and we are so proud to offer authentic projects. This class is working hard and learning so much. Keep up the great work!

Spring Vet Clinic Interest Survey
We have an amazing opportunity to partner with the Denver Dumb Friends League to host a vaccine clinic here at Washington Square.
This is a fantastic chance for our Vet Assistant students to work alongside veterinarians, and to practice many of the things they have learned throughout the year. This event will be held on a Saturday (so as not to interfere with school hours) in March or April; the details will be shared after surveys are in and evaluated.
In order to make this event worthwhile, we would love to have as many people/pets as possible. Below is a survey so the program instructor can start to get an idea of how many people are interested, and what services they would be interested in. Please complete the interest survey so we may plan for the event.
