MKS News - September 2024
So good to be back dancing with you!
Is Cross-Training What Your Dancer Needs?
We are asked many times if taking an additional class would be helpful for a dancer.
Imagine a Ballet dancer with incredible musicality and Hip Hop dancers with added grace and fluidity...
--> We have one dancer whose favorite style of dance is Tap, and she knows that the foundations learned in Ballet and Pointe have helped her to excel in Tap.
--> There are also a couple teens who love Ballet AND Hip Hop equally. I'm pretty old school, so this one escapes me - lol! But I do see that the strength that is built in Hip Hop supports their Ballet dancing, and the discipline learned in Ballet helps them to be dedicated to executing their Hip Hop moves with technical proficiency!
Would an additional perspective help propel your dancer to the next level?
Cross-Training in different styles of dance not only enhances a dancer's movements but also helps them to rise to the next level more quickly. Taking 2 classes in one year is comparable to taking 1 class each year for 2 years.
Cross-training helps dancers:
- Build up supporting muscle groups
- Gain greater body awareness and movement vocabulary
- Avoid overuse of the same muscles, which is a leading cause of injury in dancers
Additionally, if your dancer is wanting to improve their technique, musicality, strength, expression, memory, and more, they can choose an appropriate complementary class.
Here are some examples -
- Ballet pairs nicely with all other styles, as it teaches many foundational movements as well as a strong discipline and work ethic.
- Tap class helps dancers develop musicality, articulation of the foot and ankle in different ways than Ballet and helps build leg muscle strength.
- Flexibility & Conditioning helps students to gain greater core strength as well as become trained on how to stretch more deeply.
- Modern/Contemporary and Musical Theatre use a broader language of abstract movement, which counteracts the structured movements used in Ballet. They also allow for more self-expression for dancers who desire that.
- Tumble, Hip Hop, Dance Team, and Jazz classes work primarily in parallel, which counteracts all the turnout that is used in Ballet and also has some faster and larger gross motor movements that can help especially with leaps and turns.
Would this be something that could help your dancer?
