Superintendent's Message: The Impact of the Pottawatomie County Half-Cent Sales Tax on Bethel Public Schools
Dear Parents, Students, and Community Members,
In November 2015, the citizens of Pottawatomie County made a resounding statement in support of local education by approving a half-cent sales tax increase. This funding initiative, collected and overseen by the Pottawatomie County Commissioners, has provided vital resources to every school district in the county, including Bethel Public Schools.
Since revenue collection began in July 2016, these funds have played a crucial role in enhancing our schools, benefiting both students and staff. The allocation is based on student enrollment, ensuring an equitable distribution of resources across the county. Initially estimated to generate $286 per student annually, this funding has allowed us to make significant improvements without relying on salary budgets.
Investments in Our Schools
To date, Bethel Public Schools has received over $3.7 million from this program. The Board of Education has prioritized capital improvements, technology advancements, safety enhancements, and transportation upgrades. Here are some of the key investments made possible by the half-cent sales tax:
Technology Enhancements
Upgraded classroom technology across all district sites to support digital learning and improve instructional tools.
Transportation Upgrades
Purchased new school buses to enhance safety and reliability for both daily routes and extracurricular activities.
Textbook Purchases
Supplied new textbooks for Bethel Elementary and Bethel Middle School, improving access to updated learning materials.
Athletic and Extracurricular Support
Purchased new marching band uniforms for Bethel High School, enriching student experiences and school spirit.
Updated football uniforms for the Bethel High School football team, ensuring athletes have quality equipment.
Utility Costs
Covered district utility expenses over multiple school years, allowing more funds to be directed toward student-centered initiatives.
Facility Improvements
Installed a new HVAC system in the Bethel Activity Center, creating a safer and more comfortable environment for school events.
Looking Ahead: Ensuring Continued Support
With the sales tax measure set to expire in June 2026, it is imperative that we consider its renewal. Schools throughout the county are hopeful that citizens will once again recognize the importance of this funding by voting to extend or make the tax permanent. A county resolution and vote on this issue are expected in mid-2025.
The Pottawatomie County Half-Cent Sales Tax has been transformative for Bethel Public Schools, enabling us to invest in critical resources that would otherwise be out of reach. As we approach the 2025 vote, we encourage our community to stay informed and engaged in the discussion surrounding this essential funding source.
Your continued support directly impacts the quality of education in our district. Together, we can ensure that Bethel Public Schools remains a place of opportunity, growth, and excellence for future generations. Thank you for standing with us!
Sincerely,
Dr. Matt Posey, Superintendent

Pink Out Night: Wildcats Rally for Abbie Mohr-Johnson
In the fight against cancer, we know that coming together is the key to making a difference. Each year, the Bethel and Jones basketball community joins forces to raise funds in support of those battling this disease. This year’s Pink Out Night, held on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, was particularly meaningful as we pledged all proceeds to support 2017 Bethel alumnus, Abbie Mohr-Johnson.
Abbie was an integral part of our school community during her time at Bethel. She excelled in the classroom, maintaining an impressive 4.1 GPA, served as a dedicated member of the student council, and took on the esteemed role of chairman of the homecoming committee during her senior year—an honor that speaks volumes in our school’s tradition. Abbie also proudly represented Bethel on the basketball court, playing with both skill and heart.
Reflecting on Abbie’s high school years, one memory stands out: the time she requested a letter of recommendation during her senior year. That letter highlighted her remarkable work ethic, leadership, and academic excellence. But the final line remains the most powerful: "I cannot end this reference letter without saying above all else I am so grateful that my 11-year-old daughter has a teenager like Abbie to look up to."
That sentiment remains true today. Abbie, you continue to inspire us with your strength and resilience. Once a Wildcat, always a Wildcat. We stand with you. No one fights alone!
The energy in the gym on Pink Out Night was electric as students, parents, and community members filled the stands in pink attire, showing their love and support. The evening was filled with heartfelt tributes, exciting basketball matchups, and, most importantly, a collective effort to make a difference. Thanks to the generosity of our community, we were able to raise significant funds to help support Abbie in her fight.
We are so grateful to everyone who contributed, attended, and cheered on both our teams and Abbie. This night was a testament to the power of unity, love, and resilience. Together, we are stronger!

Teen Dating Violence Awareness
February is National Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month. This is an issue that impacts everyone. Not just teens, but their parents, teachers, friends, and communities as well. Studies show that approximately 10% of adolescents report being the victim of physical violence at the hands of an intimate partner. Adolescents in abusive relationships often carry these unhealthy patterns of violence into future relationships. Children who are victimized or witness violence frequently bring this experience with them to the playground, the classroom, later into teen relationships and, ultimately, they can end up the victims and perpetrators of adult intimate partner violence. Here are some warning signs of an abusive relationship.
- Name calling
- Isolation
- Explosive temper
- Put downs
- Checking your phone without your permission
- Excessive testing
- Possessiveness
- Jealousy
- Blaming you for their problems
- Monitoring your location
- Threats of harm
- Controlling behavior
If you know a teen or parent that could benefit from speaking to someone please connect with them at the National Dating Abuse Helpline at 1-866-331-9474 or text "loveis" to 77054. You can also have a live chat at loveisrespect.org.

PARENT CONFERENCES – February 13 from 3:00-9:00.
Please sign up with your child’s teacher for conferences.
NO SCHOOL on February 14-17. Students return on February 18.
As the spring semester begins, please remember how important attendance and academics are to being successful at state testing time. Please remember to help your child be here daily and on time, to read with them daily, and to make sure they get all homework done. Those students that miss even a portion of the day miss instruction which adversely affects their academic success. Studies indicate that parental involvement helps to make students succeed academically.
STATE TESTING IS APRIL 15 – MAY 14
Please try not to schedule appointments during the testing window. Your teacher will be sending out specific testing schedules for each grade level.
The Wednesday Parent Communication Folders go home every Wednesday. Please remember to check all materials in the folder and sign and return to your child’s teacher the following day. All important information will be in the folder each week.
ATTENDANCE is a must for a student to be successful academically. Please have your child to school each day and on time. Those students that miss even a portion of the day miss instruction which adversely affects their academic success.
Remember to please not drop your child off at school prior to 7:35 a.m. and make all after school transportation arrangements PRIOR to school. Calls to the office to let your child know how to get home are a big disruption to the classroom and the learning environment.
Please remember to “like” the Bethel Upper Elementary Facebook page. We post important information on the site. Also, parent communications will be sent via email and text. If you have not received any emails or texts, please contact Mrs. Campbell at Ext 1100 to update your information.
PTO POPCORN DAY
We will continue to have PTO POPCORN DAY at the Upper Elementary once per month. If you would like your child to participate, please send $1.00 on the following dates:

Boys State - Leadership Opportunity
What is Boys State?
Oklahoma American Legion Boys State is an intense week of non-partisan leadership, government, and patriotism sponsored by the American Legion of Oklahoma. Delegates to Boys State have just completed their junior year of high school and have been selected by their local American Legion Post as a representative of the best of their community. Boys State was established in the 1930s as a way to counter anti-American activity during the pre-World War II era. It was so successful as a citizenship training activity that is remains the premier program of its type in the United States.
Informational pamphlets are available on Mrs. Ingmire's board outside of her office. If you plan to apply, please see Mrs. Ingmire for a sponsorship code to help pay for the camp. Please use the link below to be directed to their website.
