Message from the Principal

Families,

We are off to a great start to the 2nd Semester. We recently completed Winter Benchmarking Assessments followed by meetings with each teaching team to determine instructional adjustments and plan interventions. I am pleased to report that we did meet our schoolwide goal of having 70% or more of our students meet their Winter Growth Goal on the NWEA Math MAP test. We celebrated by having a schoolwide assembly in which a student who had demonstrated the greatest amount of growth from each homeroom got to pie Mrs. Webb and I in the face! We have made a concerted effort to improve our math instruction in recent years, so I am proud of our team for the growth our kids have made.

Our ELA data does bring more cause for concern as it is not on par with our math proficiency. We are in the midst of ELA curricular resource review. This consisted of a representative team from each grade level/department reviewing our existing resources, researching potential other options, and hearing presentations from 3 different companies. Our team overwhelmingly selected CKLA Amplify to be our new ELA resource moving forward and will make the recommendation that the Board of Education Approve it at the March School Board Meeting. I support this recommendation as it is much more closely aligned to current research in the area of literacy instruction with a recommendation of the Reading League and multiple experts in the field of education. The proposed changes should provide our students with greater foundational skills and background knowledge to give all of our students a better opportunity to become proficient readers.

We are going to try a new approach with this month's Parent/Family Advisory Meeting and shift to having it virtually.
