The Virtual Family Series
2021-2022
Please join Midwestern Intermediate Unit IV for a virtual Family Series that will run monthly throughout the school year discussing various topics from behavior to transitioning to the adult world.
Each session will run one day a month at 12:00 and 7:00. You can attend as many sessions as you like at the time that best meets your schedule. Sign up for sessions via the button at the bottom of the page. Registration begins May 1, 2021.
A few days ahead of each session you will receive an email with a reminder as well as a link to join the session. We look forward to seeing you soon!
Behavior Basics in the Home Environment
Problem behaviors can lead to feelings of frustration for everyone involved. It is important to recognize that we can increase positive behaviors by focusing on the behaviors we want to see more often. This session will provide an overview for decreasing problem behaviors and teaching replacement behaviors in the home environment. There will be a focus on strategies for increasing positive behaviors through the use of reinforcement strategies.

How to Support Your Child in Reading
Reading is one of the most powerful skills a student can learn. Reading develops the mind and opens the world up to a child. Through reading children develop vocabulary, improve their concentration, and learn about different cultures. This session will give family members tips and resources for helping your student make progress in reading.

What is Assistive Technology?
Come learn about Assistive Technology at Midwestern Intermediate Unit IV! The process of Assistive Technology will be discussed in a supportive and interactive manner. AT tools for speaking, reading, writing, vision, and computer access will be presented. Strategies will be highlighted to support students using Assistive technology in the school setting. Questions will be welcomed!

Social Emotional Learning at Home
Building Social and Emotional Learning skills from a young age are incredibly important for lifelong success for children. Social and Emotional Learning can start at home. Families can be critical partners in helping their children to develop these essential skills. This session will provide an overview of understanding and supporting your child's Social and Emotional Learning in your home.

Understanding FBA's and Behavior Plans
As a parent/caregiver, you have a very important role in the development of a Functional Behavior Assessment for your child. When you understand this process, you can work effectively with your child's team to develop the best supports for your child. This training will provide an overview of understanding the purpose and process of a Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) as well as the development of a Positive Behavior Support Plan.

Self Advocacy skills involve learning how to speak up for yourself, express your wants and needs, and have a say in decisions about your life. This topic and how it relates to the three main areas of Secondary Transition, post-secondary, employment, and independent living, will be explored.

Helping My Child Use a Communication Device at Home
Did you know that AAC stands for Augmentative and Alternative Communication? These terms mean that the "device" is meant to supplement and also provide another way to communicate. Devices come in all shapes, sizes, and even different colors! Strategies will be provided to support staff with teaching students using an AAC device. The discussion will include core language, aided language input, modeling, current research, and AAC myths. Come with all your AAC questions!

How to Skip the Summer Slide
The summer slide is the tendency for students to lose some of the achievement gains they made during the school year. Families can help their child avoid this loss in both reading and math by adding a few daily activities to their summer schedules. This session will give families activities and resources to help their child skip the summer slide.
