Solar Eclipse - April 8, 2024
On April 8, 2024, there will be a spectacular solar eclipse. A solar eclipse happens when the Moon moves between the Earth and the Sun creating a shadow on Earth. When this happens, the moon gradually blocks out the light from the sun. While Glenview residents will not be in the path of the total solar eclipse, 93% of the sun will be blocked. The next eclipse of this magnitude will not occur in Glenview until the year 2048.
After spring break, your student will learn
- The science behind a solar eclipse
- The risks of looking at the sun and how to stay safe while viewing an eclipse
Since the April 8th solar eclipse will occur during the school day, your child will have an opportunity to view the solar eclipse. As always, safety is a primary concern. Looking directly at the sun, even during an eclipse can cause damage to the eyes. The only safe way to directly view the sun will be through “eclipse glasses”.
All District 34 students in grades 3-5 will be provided with eclipse glasses. At no time should students remove their eclipse glasses and look directly at the sun. Teachers will provide clear instructions on their use, and other safety precautions, before students head outside to view the eclipse. Prior to the 8th, please speak with your child about the importance of keeping their eyes safe and wearing their glasses for the duration of the solar eclipse.
If you do not wish for your student to participate in the eclipse viewing, please email me and your child’s classroom teacher by Friday April 5th.
Take Care All,
Selene Stewart
Hoffman Principal
