That one of the most concerning issues with vapes, e-cigarettes, etc., is that it is virtually impossible to visually recognize what is or isn’t inside of the vaping device. Most e-juices look similar (brown, tan, reddish oily consistency) and smell very sweet. The reality is most of these devices are obtained on the black market or online, virtually eliminating the ability to definitively identify the contents of any single vaping device and/or pod.

As adults, our first steps include sharing knowledge of this growing issue, keeping a close eye out at home and at school for these devices and sweet smells, staying up to date on available research and resources, and talking with our child(ren).

Our PISD Substance Abuse Prevention Specialists are dedicated to educating and supporting the students and adults in our school community on the vaping and substance abuse. Throughout the school year, they will be hosting “town hall-style” parent information meetings at the schools listed below on the specified dates:

Plano Senior High- September 26th- 7:00 p.m.

Plano West Senior High - October 2nd- 6:30 p.m.

Plano East Senior High- February 20th- 7:00 p.m.

Community panel members such as: Plano PD, Collin County Substance Abuse, Access Counseling and OnPoint Families will be in attendance to share their expertise about this critical topic. AP exam registration now open via PayPams. The deadline to register is November 1st. Information regarding fees and the registration process was sent home with your AP Student, or you may access the McMillen AP website for more information

The CogAT is taken by students in grades 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9 in the fall of the school year. This test provides a measurement of a student's cognition or reasoning skills that is not captured in school grades or other measures of school achievement. The three primary uses of the CogAT scores are:

• to guide efforts to adapt instruction to the needs and abilities of students,
• to provide an alternative measure of cognitive development, and
• to identify students whose predicted levels of achievement are markedly discrepant from their observed levels of achievement.

If you would like to know more about your child's CogAT scores, contact your child's counselor after Thanksgiving.
