Wednesday is Unity Day! October is National Bullying Prevention Month. We’ll celebrate by wearing ORANGE, the color that symbolizes safety, and together show that we are united and stand together in sharing kindness and promoting acceptance and inclusivity. Students will have opportunities to share notes of kindness and encouragement during break and lunch in the quad.

Earthquake Drill: CHS will be participating in the CA Shake Out earthquake drill on Thursday, October 17th.

AP Testing Information: Registration for AP testing CLOSES on OCTOBER 30th. To register and pay for AP testing please visit http://aptsusa.com/chs. This link provides step by step instructions for activating your exam and payment.

CHS Counselor Corner

PARENTS OF SENIORS!

If your student is going to any type of college, including UC, Cal State, Community or any other private or public University, students need to add their colleges they are applying to in Xello, our college and career platform. We prepped the students as juniors last year and then reviewed it with them during the senior assembly on September 10th and sent an email and did homeroom activities to add colleges on September 18th. You will receive an email on Tuesday October 15th with additional details on what is required and detailed instructions. Please reach out to your student’s counselor if you have any questions.

XELLO - CHS’S COLLEGE AND CAREER PLATFORM - PARENT/GUARDIAN LOGIN

Xello is the new college and career platform for CHS and was rolled out to students in 2023-2024. New invite links were sent to all parents/guardians who have not linked their account yet on Tuesday October 8th. You should have received an email from noreply@xello (on your email that is in Synergy) inviting you to create your Family Account. A separate email detailed information on the platform, along with videos and resources was sent out on September 16th. If you have any questions regarding your Xello account, please email Kristen Ereno at kristen.ereno@coronadousd.net.

Fall CHS College Counseling Workshops -- Our SDSU Admissions Rep is at CHS this week!

CHS Counselors will have informative sessions and drop-in help availability on various topics throughout the fall on Mondays during lunch in room 202. Pizza from Village Pizzeria will be provided (Thank you, PTO)! The following are the workshops offered:

October 4th - Military and Drop-in
November 18th - 22nd - Drop-in College Application Workshops

UC/Cal State Application Deadlines Extended to December 2nd!

Due to November 30th occurring on a weekend this year, the UC and Cal State systems have extended their application deadline to December 2nd at 11:59pm. The counselors recommend submitting the application prior to Thanksgiving break so it can be reviewed by a counselor.

Society of Women Engineers invites you to their Women in STEM Panel “Empowered to Dream and Driven to Achieve” on October 17th from 5 – 7 pm at Mesa College.

The panel will feature several women STEM professionals representing some of San Diego’s top organizations, including Intuit, Becton Dickinson, and Greater Than Tech. Panelists will share their insights and experiences to inspire the next generation of women in STEM.

STUDENT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR HALLOWEEN HAPPENING - Friday October 25th from 3:30pm-5:30pm

The City of Coronado’s Recreation Department needs student volunteers to run the activities for the younger kids. Bring a friend and come to Spreckels Park at 3:00pm to get your activity assignment! Halloween costumes are encouraged. Email Stacy at sberman@coronado.ca.us toto sign up to volunteer for this fun event.

LIFEGUARDS NEEDED for City of Coronado Aquatics Center - NO Experience Needed!

Requirements: 16 years old and basic swimming ability. Training for lifeguard certification will be provided. Apply online through the City of Coronado’s employment website HERE.

STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE NEEDED for the City of Coronado Parks and Recreation Commission.

Commission Meets once a month on a Monday at 4pm at city hall. An opportunity to represent teens in Coronado on all parks and recreation matters. Great experience to list on college applications or resume. Apply online HERE. For questions, please reach out to sberman@coronado.ca.us.

CHS Library Updates

Happy Filipino American History Month!

October marks the celebration of Filipino American History Month (FAHM), commemorating the first recorded presence of Filipinos in America in October 1587. In 2009 under President Barack Obama, October was officially declared Filipino American History Month by the United States Congress. For 2024, the Filipino American National Historical Society (FANHS) has announced the theme: “Struggle, Resistance, Solidarity, and Resilience.” Stop by the CHS Library to see a selection of books written by Filipino American authors and to pick up a special bookmark. There is also a special Filipino heritage display just outside of the library for all to enjoy.

2024-2025 Reading Goals

How many books will our Islanders read in a year? Encourage your students to visit the CHS Library to make a personal reading goal for this school year! Students who make a reading goal will be entered into a drawing for a free book! Prizes will also be awarded to those who complete their reading goal anytime this school year.

Islander Company participated in an academic team competition at Paloma Valley High school in Menifee CA. The unit represented themselves with honor, courage and commitment and qualified for the quarter finals at the academic team competition. The unit has many exciting upcoming events. Please stay tuned for more information. As always, please come out and support your Islander Company cadets at their upcoming events. The cadets are all doing well with their academic, drill team, physical fitness and citizenship training requirements. Girls Water Polo Lunch Meeting Thursday, 10/17 in the PE Classroom: Anyone interested in playing Water Polo should come out at lunch to meet the team and coach. Bring a friend and it's going to be a great season! All skill levels are welcome.

Speed Training: Islander Sports Foundation is offering a new 4-week class to help athletes run faster. The coach has worked with Olympian sprinters and you will be able to see the difference. A $30 deposit will be collected and will be applied to package purchase or will be reimbursed upon completion of your yearbook photo. Senior Portraits are due BEFORE the December Break and they fill up fast.

Coronado High School Yearbook Senior Portrait Clothing Information

This is the LAST yearbook photo of your high school career. It is not an ID photo - it will appear in the SENIOR section of the yearbook. Dress in a manner that shows your individuality, but makes that as professional as it can be. Seniors may select to wear the black drape or tuxedo option provided by the photographer. Students not wearing appropriate attire will be required to wear a black wrap or tuxedo jacket provided by the photographer.

Here are some suggestions:
