SEMS Weekly Newsletter
November 10th, 2024
Good Afternoon SEMS Families,
Our very own PE Teacher, Gary Keeton wrote the following to our district staff in honor of Veteran's Day and I thought he said it best so I am sharing it with you all as well.
"Greetings SMUSD,
As a former Marine, I am honored to stand with my fellow Veterans as we remember the sacrifices made in the name of freedom. Today, we honor all who have served—those who faced battles abroad, those who stood watch here at home, and the countless families who have supported us over the past 248 years. Every freedom we cherish has come at a price, one paid by men and women willing to serve something greater than themselves. To my fellow Veterans, thank you for your service, your resilience, and your steadfast commitment to our great nation. Today, we celebrate you, and we remember that our freedom endures because of your courage.
Semper Fi,
Gary Keeton"

State of the Union
On Thursday, our students participated in a "State of the Union" whereby our ASB leaders introduced themselves to the students and answered student questions. Questions ranged from bullying to food waste to field trips! It brought to my attention the need to re-iterate our school policies regarding bullying and harassment and was grateful for the opportunity to review our procedures with our students. While we will continue to educate our students through our No Place for Hate program and through Homeroom activities, I thought I would share our policies here again as well. We take all forms of bullying, harassment, and racism very seriously and urge your students to tell an adult on campus if they experience this so we can address it immediately. It takes a village and we rely on working together. Our next No Place for Hate activity will be about "The Power of Words: Understanding and Challenging Biased Language."
#icanhelp Assembly: December 10th
We have invited the #icanhelp organization to come to our school to teach our students about digital safety. While we have seen an increase in positive student interactions with a cell phone free environment for most of the day, we also recognize that most of our students have cell phones and believe it is important for us to teach them how to use them safely. We will hold grade level assemblies in the morning and have a parent presentation that night.
