Scarborough Middle School
Family Newsletter for 11.22.24
Hello Scarborough Middle School Families,
We want to thank our middle school families for taking the time to attend our recent parent-teacher conferences and hope that your conference provided you with some valuable insight into your child’s progress in school. We look forward to our continued partnership throughout the remainder of the school year.
On another note, with a shortened week ahead of us, there will not be a newsletter next week. We want to take the opportunity now to extend our wishes that you are all able to enjoy the upcoming break from school with your families.
Respectfully,
Kathy Tirrell, Principal
Chris Murphy, Assistant Principal
Shop For a Cure
The Class of 2029 and Red Storm Strikes out Cancer are in need of your help! We are holding a fundraiser called Shop for a Cure.
First, we are looking for families to donate new or gently used items. We are looking for items that you think students would be interested in purchasing as a gift for a family member, friend, or perhaps for themselves. Items can be dropped off to SMS between November 25 - December 10.
Students will have an opportunity to purchase these items on December 12th and 13th. Proceeds will be split between these two groups. Please see the below flyers for more information.
The Cromwell Center
Scarborough Middle School was happy to partner with The Cromwell Center for Disabilities Awareness on November 18th and 19th. Our 6th grade students took part in some great conversations about abilities, respect and inclusion. This fit perfectly with Scarborough Middle School's own efforts to build kindness and respect for all students.
The Cromwell center is a Maine non-profit working with local schools to build kindness, respect, and inclusion. Since 2004, they have brought programs into more than 8,000 Maine classrooms! They do not charge schools for these sessions; they rely on individual donors, community groups, local businesses, and grants to make this work possible.
If you would like to support The Cromwell Center's work:
1) Look for @cromwellcenter on Facebook, like our page, and please post a comment if there’s something your child shared with you about what they learned or enjoyed.
2) Invite us to speak at your PTA, church, or local service club.
3) Make a donation online or by mail using the info below, donate an item to our annual
auction, or choose us as a beneficiary if you are involved in local fundraising events.

Tissues Needed!
Cold and Flu season is here! We go through many many boxes of tissues here at SMS. If you could please donate any boxes of tissues it would be greatly appreciated! Please have your student drop off any tissue donations with the main office to be distributed around the school.
Thank you in advance for your help!
A message from the SMS Clinic
To our SMS Friends and Families,
The clinic is in need of your help. We are looking to stock some commonly asked for items that fall just outside of our yearly budget in the clinic. These are items that over the years we have maintained a small stock of mostly through donations and purchasing some with our own funds. As the need for frequent snacks has increased, we are now turning to our community and asking for help to stock our clinic with the extra things our students need. Sometimes it's a simple request like, “do you have any deodorant I forgot to put some on this morning”. Other times it’s more pressing, the need for menstrual products, bathroom accidents or soiled clothing. And while sometimes parents are able to get right over to school with fresh clothes, that's not always the case.
We have included the link to an amazon wish list with items that would be most useful to us in the clinic. If you don’t use amazon and would still like to donate please take a look at the list and feel free to drop something similar off to the middle school.
Please help us continue to support our students in as many ways as possible.

Please reach out to Mr. Cabana (wcabana@scarboroughschools.org) with any questions or concerns.
For the next few weeks leading up to December break, we will start to build students' emotional granularity. This means, the ability to put feelings into precise specific words. Lessons will focus around words such as gratitude and included. Building this emotional granularity will support students when we unpack the next RULER Tool in January, the Mood Meter. Below is a conversation starter to support the building of emotional granularity at home.
RULER Family Conversation Starter: DO IT TOGETHER: A strong emotion vocabulary helps us label, understand, and manage our emotions. Look for new emotion words in songs this week.
