Message from the Principal
Welcome to the twelfth week of school year 2024-2025.
The end of the first trimester is approaching very quickly - Friday, Nov. 22nd! Students will attend one day during the week of Thanksgiving. On Monday, Nov. 25th students will attend for a half day of school and dismiss promptly at 12:30 PM.
Please be sure to sign up for a Fall conference with your child's teacher. Fall conferences are being held on Monday, November 25th from 2:00 - 4:00 PM and on Tuesday, November 26th from 12:00 - 7:30 PM. I want to ensure that every teacher is able to meet with every parent in the Fall so that we forge the best possible relationships with our students' parents/guardians. The overall student body's behavior has not been at its best so far this year, so we expect to work closely with our parents on creating intervention plans so everyone can be successful at school. When students are able to pay attention and be present in class, then they are most successful at academics.
In addition, I will continue to closely monitor behavior on the school busses and especially bus 35 and bus 58. The students on these two busses, along with the parents, have been notified that if students break any rule on the bus, then the student will be suspended from the bus for 3 school days. Interim Superintendent Dr. Rybarczyck, Chief Frank Garbraith, Transportation Supervisor Jodi Tait along with KRAPF bus drivers and myself held a Bus Safety Assembly and reviewed bus expectations. If your child or children rides a bus to and from school each day, please review the expectations as well. We need your support with making sure that the bus rides to and from school are safe for the driver and all student passengers.
A big shout out to our reading specialist, Mrs. Lori Witman, who organized and facilitated Family Bingo night last week. I appreciate all of the staff, students and families who came out to join in on the fun!
If your child has been having challenges at school, please speak with him or her about the importance of following school rules and expectations. We are not going to tolerate anyone interrupting the teachers' instructional programming and the learning of their peers. Therefore, we hope that your child comes to school prepared to follow our Caln expectations of Respect, Responsibility, and Safety.
A few very important reminders:
- School Hours: Students' instructional day begins at 9:15 am and dismissal begins at 3:45pm. During the first week of school, we expect the traffic to take longer and appreciate your patience to drive slowly and carefully in the school zone. Please remember to remain in your vehicle when dropping students off and picking students up from school. No student can be dropped off at the front of the building before school hours and if students are being dropped off after 9:30, an adult must bring the child(ren) into the lobby to sign them in and provide the reason for being late.
- Main Office Hours: The main office hours are 8:30 am - 4:15 pm. Please remember that our office is extremely busy at this time of the school year. It is best to call before visiting the office and our busiest times are during the hours of 8:30 - 10:30 AM and 2:30 - 4:00 PM, especially the first week of school. Please remember that we must work together to ensure the safety of our students and that we follow all district rules and regulations pertaining to custody arrangements and such.
- Early Dismissal: A note/email should be sent in the morning to CNAttendance@casdschools.org. The note for early dismissals should contain:
Student Name/Teacher/Date and Time of Dismissal/Reason/Name of Adult picking up and relationship/Parent Signature and parent daytime phone#. It is very important to get these notes into your child's teacher or to the main office as early as possible but definitely prior to 2:00 pm.
All early dismissals should be completed at the main office by 3:15. Students must be signed out by then. Any dismissal change requests taking place after 3:15 will be in the parent pick-up line or may be declined for the safety of our students.
The adult picking up any child must bring a government issued Photo ID (preferably a driver’s license) and be listed as a parental or emergency contact.
Refillable water bottles: Caln has transitioned to bottle filling stations. Students should bring a refillable water bottle to school.
Transportation: You should have already received bus information. A nationwide bus driver shortage is impacting many districts, including Coatesville, and may lead to increased delays. Buses normally run late the first two weeks of school as students and drivers become accustomed to their routes. We appreciate your patience. Students must follow the rules of the bus, listen to the drivers and be respectful to the drivers.
Parent-Pick-Up Notes: Thank you for having patience with us as we work to make our afternoon dismissal more efficient. If your child needs to be picked up for an early dismissal or rides a school bus, please help us with this by sending a parent pick-up note into school with your child(ren) or email cnattendance@casdschools.org.
School Calendars: Start planning ahead! This year, we have provided a Caln Events Calendar to each student (in the folders) and I will add each month's events to the weekly news. Please check out Can's website for more important information.
Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports (PBIS): We practice 3 important expectations at Caln: RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY & SAFETY.
Best,
Dr. Lennon

Message from the Reading Specialist
The State Parent Advisory Council (SPAC) is an organization that provides resources to parents of children in Title 1 schools in Pennsylvania. If you would like any resources, you can print out the form linked below and return it to school or mail it directly to the address listed on the form. These forms were also sent home with your child(ren) last week. SPAC also has monthly newsletters for parents with great tips on how to help your child(ren) do better at school. Attached are the ones for October and November.
Family Bingo Night is Thursday, November 7th from 6:00 PM-7:30 PM. To register for this fun event, please look for the sign-up link from PTA. Mrs. Witman will also be sharing some information about reading.
Grade level spelling bees will be held at Caln on Friday, December 13th during the school day. Specific times for each grade level are to be determined. Each 3rd, 4th and 5th grade classroom will have their own spelling bee prior to Thanksgiving break. The 1st , 2nd and 3rd place winners of each classroom bee will be participating in the grade level bee. The alternate will participate only if one of the other winners from their classroom is absent. Parents of the top 3 spellers and alternate of each classroom bee will be invited to attend the grade level bees. The 1st and 2nd place winners of each grade level bee will go on to participate in the District Bee which will be held at Rainbow Elementary School on Friday, January 3rd with a snow date of Monday, January 6th. The alternates should attend the district bee but will participate only if one of the other winners from their classroom is absent. Parents of the top 2 spellers and alternate of each grade level bee will be invited to attend the district bee and are responsible for transporting the spellers to and from the District Bee.
Fondly,

Message from the School Counselor
Red Ribbon Week was a success! Big thank you to our PTA for rolling out a real red carpet for our students to walk!
Make a Difference Day was also a huge success. We collected 741 non-perishable items to donate to the Chester County Food Bank! Thank you so much for your support. Third grade collected the most items and will receive extra recess!
Coming Up:
All 5th grade students will be screened for our gifted program in November. The screening will be done on the computer and will take about an hour. I will be going in to their classrooms to administer the screening.
Teachers will be completing the DESSA assessment for all students in the coming weeks. The DESSA is an empirical, standardized social and emotional competence (SEC) assessment with editions that support students K-12. This does not affect any grades or classes but helps us to understand how we can support our students in their Social-Emotional learning. For more information, please visit their website at: https://apertureed.com/research/about-the-dessa/
