Celebrating Educational Excellence on the National Stage
Dear Thompson Community:
In just a few months, Turner Middle School teacher Jessica May will wrap-up her time as the 2024 Colorado Teacher of the Year. In this role, Jessica has served not only as an outstanding representative throughout the state for Thompson School District, she has also been a wonderful advocate on the national stage. To help share with you what this experience has been like, I asked her to write a little bit about the journey she has been on.
*****
“Since being awarded the 2024 Colorado Teacher of the Year designation on October 27, 2023, life has been an incredible whirlwind. I’ve had the privilege of highlighting and representing our district and state, a gift I don’t take lightly as I realize there are people in power who are listening and who can help be the change makers our students, families, and staff need and deserve. From meeting people at Google’s headquarters in California, to speaking personally with the U.S. Secretary of Education on four different occasions, I now have connections to people who want to hear from teachers and learn from us.
Through this position, I have developed a close relationship with 54 amazing teaching colleagues from every state and territory in our country and globe who are the greatest resources for anything related to education. I truly can’t say enough about all of the state Teachers of the Year whom I’ve come to truly love, respect, and count on during this year of service as your Colorado representative. We are all fighting for education with a level of fierceness that makes me incredibly proud of our profession. It’s an inspiration to say the least.
The trips I’ve been able to take this past year have been simply fantastic! It was phenomenal to be invited to the White House for a State Dinner with the President and First Lady of the United States and to receive a second last-minute invitation last month. In addition, traveling to Space Camp this summer with my cohort was a dream of mine since the age of 10 and it didn’t disappoint. Plus, I’m greatly looking forward to being a part of the upcoming National College Football Championship Game in Atlanta in January of 2025 as our final official function as 2024 State Teachers of the Year.
However, the best part of this experience has been the opportunities afforded to me and all of the people I’ve partnered with. I now have resources that stretch far beyond my school and district. I feel I can take a classroom, school, district, or state issue and be able to problem-solve a plan and even a successful solution. I am armed with the knowledge from, and the resources of, people who remind me that education is the greatest profession of all time. My fellow teachers inspire me so much and I know that without them, classrooms full of future voices would cease to exist.
So here’s my plug: Through this process and year of service, I’ve also realized how wonderful it would be to have even more voices be heard from Thompson School District to bring action to our ideas and needs. How amazing would it be to have another Colorado Teacher of the Year from our district? We all know someone who is extraordinary in each of our TSD schools. In the spring, please think about nominating them by going to the Colorado Department of Education’s website. Afterward, each nominee then decides if they want to fill out the application to begin the process. I can tell you this: It’s an encouraging life-altering experience!”
*****
As we continue to move closer to the midway point of the school year, I’m reminded on a daily basis of all of the great work that is happening in our classrooms. Our instructional and support staff across TSD play a critical role in shaping the minds of our students and none of our success would be possible without that dedication from each team member.
Thank you as always for your continued support of each of our students, families and staff members. We greatly appreciate your partnership.
Sincerely,
Dr. Marc Schaffer
Superintendent

Hays Market Makes Donation to TSD
On October 8th, Ryan and Neal Hays, owners of Hays Market in Berthoud and Johnstown, presented Thompson School District and the Berthoud Schools Fund with a donation of $4245.90, which was raised during Berthoud's homecoming week through the store's "Round Up For Schools" promotion. Customers donated $2122.95 during the week and the team at Hays Market then graciously matched it. Also pictured is TSD Superintendent Dr. Marc Schaffer, Board of Education President Barb Kruse, Board Vice President Stu Boyd and Board member Dawn Kirk. The money will be used to benefit the district schools in Berthoud. THANK YOU, Hays Market, for your amazing support!
TSD Facilities Prepares for Winter Weather
As the weather changes, Facilities Services is gearing up for the cold. Our maintenance team has been preparing our heating systems, winterizing our irrigation systems, preparing for the snowplow season with training and planning, as well as a number of other activities to ensure our buildings and grounds are ready when the cold weather finally does arrive. We are working to keep the buildings as comfortable as possible; temperatures may feel a little cooler in the mornings as we work to not overheat them for the warm fall afternoons.
After a summer of projects, our Facilities team has moved right into the day-to-day operations, inspections, scheduling, and ongoing training and planning to keep everything running smoothly. We're excited for another great school year!

Help Desk Update: New Auto-Answering Feature Coming Soon!
We’re excited to share that starting at the end of October, the I.T.S Help Desk will be introducing a new auto-answering feature to better assist callers by directing them to the right support team. This update will help improve response times and allow everyone to receive the assistance they need.
When you call the Help Desk:
Press 1 for staff and parents needing assistance with technical questions
Press 2 for students needing assistance with logging in or device troubleshooting
Press 3 for registrars, secretaries, and school administrators needing assistance with elevated Student Information System (SIS) support
Students: Get the Help You Need!
One of the biggest benefits of this new system is the opportunity for students to get tech support directly from the Help Desk. As we grow our apprenticeship program with the I.T.S. Help Desk (learn more about our apprentice program), we want to encourage all students to take advantage of this resource for any technology-related issues they might face, from troubleshooting school devices to accessing online resources.
The Help Desk is staffed with knowledgeable IT professionals and apprentices who are here to assist.
The Help Desk is available:
- Monday–Thursday: 7:30 AM – 5:30 PM
- Friday: 7:30 AM – 4:30 PM
We’re committed to making sure every student has the tools they need to succeed in their academic journey. Look for this new feature in the coming month, and don’t hesitate to reach out by calling 970-613-7777 or emailing helpdesk@tsd.org!

Keep Your Child Healthy and in School!
A regular attendance routine is important for your child’s well-being, learning and long-term success. As we head into the colder weather months, find tips here about how to keep your child healthy and avoid unnecessary absences from school.
Is Your Child Missing School Due to Anxiety?
Definition of anxiety: feeling of fear and uneasiness about everyday situations.
If your child is suffering from anxiety, you are not alone. The good news is that in most situations, anxiety is normal and temporary. Anxiety becomes a concern if it persists — it can affect relationships with family, peers and teachers, contribute to academic challenges, and lead to school avoidance/refusal. Addressing anxiety is important for a child’s overall well-being, not just attendance. See this flyer for more information and talk with your school's nurse, counselor, or social worker about what can help your child feel great about school again!
TSD Inclement Weather Guidelines
During periods of inclement weather, Thompson School District is occasionally faced with the difficult decision on whether or not to close schools. You can find more information about this process and how these announcements are communicated here:
