Ripon Cathedral School Update
Week ending Friday 7th March 2025
World Book Day
On World Book Day, we celebrated with a wonderful mix of creativity and fun! The children looked fantastic in their costumes, dressing up as amazing book characters. Our Year 2 class led a beautiful worship service, sharing the magic of World Book Day and the endless stories we can get lost in. The older year groups also read with the younger ones, creating a wonderful opportunity to inspire a love of reading and spark excitement for new adventures in books. It was a day full of imagination, connection, and joy!
Pancake Races
Our Year 3 children celebrated Shrove Tuesday at the Cathedral. Events started with a special service led by Dean John. This was followed by pancake races which were a lot of fun. The action was even caught on film. Hopefully familiar faces were spotted on Look North's evening news! Thank you to the Cathedral clergy, staff and volunteers for reminding us of the meaning of Shrove Tuesday and for the delicious pancakes and exciting races!
Bethel Church Workshop
On Monday, Year 5 and Year 6 were lucky enough to attend a workshop at Bethel Church which took them on a journey through the Old Testament. They met Sarah and Abraham; Moses and his mother; and Daniel who survived the lion's den. They listened to many other stories from the Old Testament too. They listened beautifully and were a real credit to the school. After this, the children were divided into groups to mime one of the stories from the Bible - we all had to guess which part each group were acting out. They did this with such enthusiasm. The volunteers were very impressed with their behaviour. Well done to everyone and thank you - it was a great afternoon.
Stars of the Week
Congratulations to this week's stars:
Nursery - Violet for always engaging in activities.
Reception - Layla S for always having a fantastic attitude to her learning. Layla comes in every morning and immediately gets on with her writing, often independently writing 3 or 4 sentences. This week she has worked really hard when learning about the life cycle of a plant using the play dough to mould the stages, then adding labels!
Year 1 - Rory for his fantastic recount! He used time connectives, the pronouns I and my and remembered to use spaces between words.
Year 2 - Seb for showing our school values this week. Seb has been showing perseverance during his assessments. He has shown respect to teachers and other children and he's been continuing to build friendships in school.
Year 3 - James for his super partner work to produce a movie trailer. He listened carefully to the instructions and thought conscientiously about his editing decisions.
Year 4 - Gabby for challenging herself during work on division and division with remainders, using resources to support herself with complex calculations.
Year 5 - Ivy for her persevering attitude in areas of her learning this week.
Year 6 - Martha for always striving for excellence. She takes every opportunity to challenge herself and her attitude to learning is exemplary.
Parent Teacher Appointment Evenings
Parent teacher consultations are taking place next weeejkon Tuesday 11th and Thursday 13th March for all classes including Nursery. Most parents have booked their appointment online. Please visit
riponcathedral.schoolcloud.co.uk or contact Mrs Rich if you are experiencing any difficulties booking online.
Please note that you should book only one appointment per child (not one on each evening or one per teacher if your child is in Year 3 or Year 5). All appointments will take place in the school hall.
Parent Governor Vacancy
All parents were sent an email on Thursday detailing our current governor vacancy. Please contact Mrs Rich if you need further information or have missed the email. Mrs Rich can also provide you with the nomination and self-declaration form if you are interested in filling the vacancy or you can find them by following this link to the school website https://riponcathedralschool.org.uk/Governors/
The governing board, with the head teacher, has overall responsibility for the running of the school. The three core functions for all boards are:
- to ensure that the school has a clear vision, ethos and strategic direction;
- to hold the head teacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils;
- to oversee the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent.
You do not need any specific qualifications to be a governor. The most important thing is that you are interested in the success of the school and are prepared to play an active part in the work of the governing board. Parent governors are valued members of the team. An effective board will have a range of skills, and we would welcome nominations from parents with knowledge and experience of:
- Safeguarding;
- Early Years’ Education;
- Primary Curriculum.
FEAST Holiday Activities
All children and young people across North Yorkshire can get involved in a range of holiday activities, with free places and a free meal for children and young people receiving benefits-related free school meals. The latter will be receiving an email with further information and vouchers for the Easter holidays next week.
