Military dad makes surprise visit after 6-month deployment
Second grader Jaymes Arter joined his classmates in putting his head down on his desk and closing his eyes for what he thought was a game that his teacher Mrs. Rebecca Ellerbrock was playing with the class on a Friday afternoon. He didn't expect that when he opened his eyes that his dad, who has been serving overseas for the past six months, would be standing in front of him. Jaymes got up from his seat and leapt into his father's arms during the emotional reunion that left others in the Central Elementary classroom teary-eyed as well.
Jaymes' father, Richard Arter, is a member of the Army National Guard and has been serving in Poland.
Joining the reunion was Jaymes' step-mom, Emily Travis, who said that the family just plans to take it easy and "chill" this weekend as they enjoy having Richard back home.
Students get to know their classmates during first weeks of school
Many students got to know their new classmates during the first week of school by participating in team building and ice breaker activities.
Davison Middle School Art Teacher Erin Mohrman, who is new to the district this year, had her students participate in a portrait challenge.
"Students counted off to five and matched up numbers to find their group," she explained. "Teams had five minutes to create a portrait by adding one item to the paper at a time. After the time was up I hung all portraits on the wall and we voted for the most creative portrait. The rule was that it had to be a portrait but did not have to be human."
In Allisoyn Johnson's Spanish class at Davison Middle School, students were introduced to each other by playing a game of Human Rubik's Cube. Using Post-It Notes, students wrote down their first name on one of the Post-It notes and the initial of their last name on the other. Students are then put into groups where the Post-It notes are scrambled. The goal of the game is for every student to get his or her Post-It notes back.
This group won the portrait challenge in art class during second hour.
Cops and Cans collection is tomorrow!
The Davison High School Key Club and Davison Township Police are hosting their annual "Cops and Cans" non-perishable food drive on Saturday, September 7. Students and School Resource Officer Kevin Roberts will be collecting items from 9 a.m. to noon at VG's.
All of the food collected will be donated to the Eastern Michigan Food Bank.
ASE recognizes DHS Auto Teacher for 25 years of service
Andrew Michalik, Auto Technology Teacher at Davison High School, recently received an Auto Service Excellence (ASE) medallion in recognition of his 25 years as a master technician. Mr. Michalik said he normally just receives a yearly recertification medallion and was pleasantly surprised to find this in his mail just prior to the new school year. He was 18 years old when he passed his first national test.

Learn about the Davison Early College program
Parents of students who are freshmen and sophomores at Davison High School are invited to attend an informational meeting to learn about the Davison Early College program. The meeting will take place 6-6:45 p.m. Wednesday, October 9, in the Community Room at Davison Middle School.
The Davison Early College (DEC) program is a three-year high school program designed to allow Davison High School students to explore and earn their high school diploma while simultaneously earning college credits toward a Michigan Early College Association (MEMCA) certification, an associate degree, credentials or transferable credits in a career pathway while in high school.
Students apply during their sophomore year. Students accepted into the program will begin blending coursework with college-level coursework in 11th grade, adding additional courses in 12th grade, and completing a full schedule of college courses in their 13th year. Students must commit to the 13th year of school.
Students in the DEC will receive support services to assist them in their transition from high school to college. Students will work closely with the Early College Coordinator as they progress through the program. In addition, students will have access to Davison High School support systems, a Mott Community College Success Coach and other Mott Community College resources.

You can support our Gold Out and Pink Out fundraisers!
As you may already be aware, Davison Community Schools traditionally holds two fundraisers in the fall to raise money for cancer patients and research.
One of the ways we raise funds is through the sale of T-shirts. We are fortunate to have two shops in Davison that generously donate a portion of their sales to our campaign: Hilton Screeners and K&C Special Ts.
While orders for the Gold Out are no longer being taken, you can still participate in the Pink Out fundraiser. Please see the details and ordering information below. You can order and pay for everything online and even have it delivered! Please pay attention to order deadlines to avoid being left out!
Our annual Pink Out game will be held on Friday, October 18. Pink is the color to symbolize breast cancer. All money collected will go directly to the American Cancer Society (Flint and Genesee County). Again, staff will participate in a District Jean Day on October 9 with their $5 donations to wear jeans to work that day going to the same cause.
