Special Education Scoop
January 2023
Happy 2023 and Welcome Back to School
We hope that everyone had a wonderful break and had some time to relax while spending time with family and friends!
Our community has much to be thankful for as we brought 2022 to a close. The tremendous opportunities to enhance the learning for our students continue to expand and become more effective. Thanks to each of you for all that you did in 2022 to provide exceptional education for our children.
This year we will continue our work to move from good to great in all areas while working with the students that we serve. The Special Education Department will refine the skills that we use to reach students while also embracing new research based strategies.

The Crucial Moments in the IEP Process
When holding an IEP there are many points that are crucial in developing and implementing a highly effective plan for a student. Here is a quick guide that can help us all to remember some points that will help us to help students.
If you come across excellent resources like this please pass them along so that they can be shared in future issues of the Scoop.
Providing Services During Removals
Students who are removed from school, (ie: suspension, risk assessment, or excluded from part or all of the school day) are entitled to receive services when the removal exceeds 10 cumulative or consecutive school days.
If this occurs, case managers are required to ensure disciplinary protections are in place. As such, a Manifest Determination Review meeting is to be scheduled within 10 days of the change of placement.
Please review the Disciplinary Removal Procedures:
Holiday Bazaar Thanks
On December 15, 2022, students in the Post-High/Adult Programs- Physically Other Health Impaired (POHI), Dual Diagnosis (DD), Severe Multiple Impairment (SXI), and Cross Categorial (CC)- hosted a microenterprise bazaar. This event was a first for Wayne-Westland Schools.
The evening event was a complete success, and the businesses came close to selling out all of their inventory. Many thanks and gratitude to our hardworking students and dedicated staff who made this event possible.
Parents who attended were so proud to showcase their child’s talents. It was a special night for all involved. In fact, the guests who attended this event were so elated, and are hoping to have another opportunity in the spring!
Enjoy the beautiful photos below of our staff, students, and patrons!
