Salk Seahawk Scoop
Week of 10/27/2024
Halloween At Salk
- Parade: A short "Halloween Parade" will take place beginning at 10:00AM on Thursday, October 31st. Weather permitting, we will parade outside for parents to see the costumes. Parents are welcome to line up along the crosswalk or sidewalk at St. Ronald's. All are welcome to come and watch our costume parade outdoors! The weather currently looks like it will cooperate. If the weather report changes, the outdoor parade will be canceled and parents will not be able to participate out of an abundance of safety for the students.
- Classroom Activities: Classrooms/grade levels will be planning for Halloween activities and celebrations individually, either before or after the parade. If teachers request parent volunteers to help facilitate the classroom activities, all volunteers will have to submit a Background Check.
- Costumes: Students may come to school in costume on Thursday, October 31st. They can stay in costume for the duration of the day. Costumes need to be school appropriate and cannot depict violence or excess blood/gore. No fake weapons are allowed in school (i.e. toy guns, swords, blades, etc). Costume masks can be worn for the parade, but not throughout the day. For costumes that have short skirts/shorts, leggings or pants need to be worn underneath.
Strategic Plan Survey and Community Meeting
The Strategic Planning Community Meeting has been rescheduled for Tuesday, October 29, at 6 p.m. in the Fraser High School Media Center. We invite all staff and community members to attend the meeting and help shape the 2025-2030 Strategic Plan.
We also want to thank everyone who participated in the community survey. A summary of the results and major themes from the survey can be found on our website, https://www.fraser.k12.mi.us/strategicplan.
Red Ribbon Month- Wear RED every Monday
October we celebrate Red Ribbon Month! This year's theme is “Life is a Movie, Film Drug Free.” Red Ribbon Month is a month where people, schools, and communities unite and take a visible stand against drugs. During HEART class students will focus on healthy habits and choices. Students will pledge to live a drug free life. Red Ribbon Awareness Bracelets will be worn by all staff and students throughout the month to show that we pledge to make good choices. Bracelets are expected to arrive shortly.
October is Anti-Bullying Month
As we enter Anti-Bullying Month, I want to take a moment to emphasize the importance of fostering a safe and supportive environment for our children. Bullying can have lasting effects on young minds, and it is our collective responsibility to ensure that every child feels valued and respected at school.
We encourage you to talk to your children about kindness, empathy, and the impact of their words and actions on others. Reinforce the message that everyone deserves to be treated with respect, and remind them that they can always come to you or a trusted adult if they encounter bullying.
Salk includes various activities and discussions at school aimed at raising awareness and promoting positive behavior, such as our Second-Step Curriculum and PBIS program. Your involvement is crucial in this effort. Together, we can create a community that stands against bullying and supports one another.
Thank you for your continued support in making our school a safe and nurturing place for all students.

Parking Lot Reminders!
A FEW REMINDERS:
* Please remember that the drop-off lane is not for parked cars.
* The bus loop is for buses only!
* If you want to walk your child to their door, please park in a parking spot and walk up together.
* The church graciously allows us to use their parking lot. Please do not park in reserved spaces.
Thank you for helping to create a safe parking lot for all our students!
Canvas- Parent Access
All Fraser classroom teachers provide instruction, resources, activities, and assessments to students utilizing the Canvas LMS. As a result, students have continuous access to the course materials and information regarding their achievement.
Parents/Guardians can also have continuous access to their student’s course materials and grades in Canvas by creating a parent/observer account. In addition, parents of multiple students can easily switch between their students to view grades and assignments within the same parent account.
All sign up information and resources are provided on the Fraser website.
Important reminders when using Canvas:
- Canvas works best in Chrome
- Please do not install the Canvas app (for parents or students). We are not supporting it as our staff and students are utilizing the web-based version of Canvas and it looks and works differently.
- If you signed up and paired with your students last year, you still have access to those students and their new courses this year.
- If you need to add more students to your account this year, please follow the directions provided below.
- If you have forgotten your password, you can use the Forgot Password? link on the parent sign in page. Then, enter the email address you used to set up the account to receive a password reset email.
- If you have forgotten the email you used, please reach out to Kim Keith, Kimberly.keith@fraserk12.org, for additional assistance.
Downloadable directions are linked below. In addition, helpful videos and walk-throughs may be found linked HERE.
Flags Indicate Indoor Line Up
During inclement weather, orange flags will be hung near the front and back corners of the building. These flags denote indoor line up. Our students can enter the building at 8:20 via the main entry or their normal entrances. As a reminder, the bus loop is not a drop off zone, this area needs to stay open during arrival and dismissal times.
READY OR NOT- THE COLD WEATHER IS COMING!
We're starting to see MANY students bundled up each day, which is great! Please be sure to send your child to school dressed for the weather each day. Students will start needing warm coats, gloves, hats, scarves, and/or boots daily throughout the winter.
Please take time to label each and every item- because our lost and found gets bombarded with lost winter accessories throughout the season
Please note that, per Board Policy, we will be having outdoor morning lineup and heading outdoors for our 20 minute recess(es) if the windchill is 10+ degrees.
Time outdoors is time well spent for kids, in all seasons
Charlie the Therapy Dog
Charlie has made visits to Salk the last couple of years with great success. Students are happy to see him and he really brightens the mood. Charlie will make his next visit on Wednesday, October 30th.
Charlie's purpose is to ease student's anxieties and increase positive emotions. We do not want his presence to cause fear or anxiety. As a reminder, parents have the ability to opt out of having their student interact with Charlie. If you DO NOT want your student to be around Charlie, then please fill out the opt out form linked here.
For the safety of students with allergies and Charlie, he will not be in the lunch room. Charlie will also remain out of classrooms in which parents have a student who opt out. Charlie will be under my supervision and kept on a leash at all times.
Rules for Interacting with Charlie:
Use calm bodies and inside voices when around Charlie.
Always ask before petting Charlie.
Don't take food around Charlie/feed Charlie
ATTENDANCE MATTERS...
Did you know: Chronic absence is defined as missing 10 percent or more of the school year, which is equivalent to missing 2 days a month. It includes all absences, both excused and unexcused.
Free Meals for All
Although not required, we do ask that families complete the Education Benefit Form located HERE. By doing so you help ensure the school receives additional funding.
