A MESSAGE FROM MS. PEARSON
Dear Chávez Families,
We did it! We have our students back in person, with health and safety protocols in place. Students and staff are happy to be back on site, learning together.
We are all working diligently to implement multiple and layered mitigation strategies, such as masking, distancing, cleaning, vaccinations, and quarantine of individuals when required.
Please click on the link to learn more about 4J quarantine guidelines and information.
We care about each and every one of you, and our goal is simple: to keep kids in school and learning. Thank you for all of your support in making this possible. Please let me know if there is anything I can help with.
In Partnership,
Ms. Deirdre Pearson, Principal

FAMILY RESOURCE CENTER NEWSLETTER
Greetings!
As we settle into the routines of a new school year I want to welcome all our new Chávez families and introduce myself.
I'm Ms Angie and have been working at Chávez for seven years. Six of those years as the school secretary. My role as the Family Resource Coordinator enables me to do the family outreach I love doing. Helping families connect with resources in the community, providing clothes for students, and food as needed.
Since we can't have parents in the building yet please make sure to reach out if you need help with anything or just want to say hi. We could always meet outside and chat as well.
Click on this link to go to my Family Resource Page where you will find many resources. If you are in need and or have questions please don't hesitate to contact me. https://www.smore.com/8xy59
I have included a short family survey in order to serve our families better. Please click on this link to take this short survey. Your input is important to us and very much appreciated!

Be a part of the Walk + Roll to School Day on Wednesday, Oct 6th!
We're encouraging as many students as possible to bike, walk, scoot and ride the bus to school on Wednesday, October 6th for International Walk + Roll to School Day! If you live far away and don't ride the bus, you can drive or carpool to a spot a few minutes away and walk the rest of the way. Do it as family, or gather together as a group with other families. Whether you’re continuing a habit, or starting a new one, join us to make Walk + Roll to School Day a huge success!
WELLNESS & SELF-CARE
Site Council News
It is Site Council Parent Election Time!
Have you ever wondered how you can make a difference in your child’s school?
Have you enjoyed working in the classroom or serving as a member of PACK and are now looking for another way to expand your experience and share your ideas at Chávez?
We’d love to have you as a parent representative on our school’s Site Council!
Site Council is the governing body of our school. It is made up of parent representatives serving staggered two-year terms, teacher representatives, one classified representative and the principal. Site Council meets once a month to discuss school curriculum, school structure, staff development plans and training options, the school calendar, and other concerns parents and teachers may have. Serving as a member of Site Council is an excellent way to make a difference in our school and to be involved in important issues and decisions. Two parent representatives are needed, and we have one vacancy for the 2021-22 school year.
If you are interested in becoming a parent representative on Site Council, please fill out this APPLICATION FORM by Friday, Oct. 29, 2021. Application is also linked below as a PDF; you can print and submit by hand or email it to Deirdre Pearson: pearson_d@4j.lane.edu.
Site Council reps are required to be elected by their peers. Voting will be held virtually during Conferences, Nov. 10-12, 2021.
Thanks for all you do to make our school a great place for students!
COUNSELING CORNER WITH SCHOOL SOCIAL WORKER MS. SHANNON
It has been a real joy to connect with all our students over the first few weeks of school!
I've made it around to all 18 classrooms to say hello, (re)introduce myself (and my puppet friend, Snailee, with the younger students), remind everyone of how to access me for support (click here for a digital version of the Meet with Ms. Shannon Slip students can fill out from home), and to discuss the importance of kindness/bucket-filling in our classroom and school community. During a subsequent visit to all the classes, we practiced feeling identification and strategies for regulating our unique selves and supporting one another using the framework of the Zones of Regulation. If you're interested in continuing this work at home, here's a simple handout with a visual of the Zones as well as some ideas for questions to support identification of emotions and potential strategies for regulation.
I'll be continuing classroom visits throughout the year, focusing on a variety of topics to support student well-being as a supplement to our classroom teacher-delivered Social Emotional Learning curriculum, SecondStep. Current SEL focus areas are building community, skills for learning, and empathy. Teachers may also be incorporating resources for National Bullying Prevention Month in October.
Though originally designed for distance learning times, I'll continue to update my virtual office where you'll find a variety of resources, especially in the caregiver corner. Please feel free to reach out to me if you would like to discuss your student or family's needs. I'm available via email: sell_s@4j.lane.edu or by phone at 541-790-5383.
Finally, if you've not yet filled out a Parent Collaboration survey, I'd still love to hear from you! I'm hoping to get some small groups going as well as a parent night (via Zoom for now) within the next month or so.
Wishing you well,
Ms. Shannon

TITLE ONE NEWS
Title One Annual Notice
At our school, all students receive reading instruction and math instruction each day in their general education classrooms. The Eugene 4j School District administers both reading and math assessments to each of our students three times a year~ fall, winter, and spring. Students scoring below grade level may be recommended, by the building-level team, to receive additional instructional interventions in reading and/or math. Students receiving additional interventions will have their progress monitored during regular intervals. Parents/guardians will be notified if their child is recommended to receive additional reading or math instruction.
Title One Annual Letter To Families
Dear Parent or Guardian,
Our school receives federal funds for Title I programs that are part of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA), as amended by Every Student Succeeds Act of 2015 (ESSA). Throughout the school year, we will continue to provide you with important information about this law and your child's education.
We are very proud of our teachers and feel they are ready for the coming year and we are prepared to give your child a high-quality education. As a Title I school, we must meet federal regulations related to teacher qualifications as defined in ESEA/ESSA. Under these regulations, you have the right to request information regarding the professional qualifications of your child's classroom teacher(s) or paraprofessional(s). If you request this information, the district or school will provide you with the following as soon as possible.
-
Whether the teacher meets state qualifications and licensing requirements for the grade level and subject he/she is teaching,
-
Whether the teacher received an emergency or conditional certificate through which state qualifications were waived, and
What undergraduate or graduate degrees the teacher holds, including major(s) or area(s) of concentration and the area of endorsement.
We are happy to provide you with the above-mentioned information in a timely manner, upon your request. We look forward to the year ahead and welcome your partnership in the important job of educating the children of our community. Continuous communication between home and school is key to the success of our educational program. As parents/guardians, you are encouraged to be actively involved in your child's education by talking to your child about school, volunteering whenever possible, and participating in school/district activities!
Respectfully,
Jeffry Johnson
Federal Programs Administrator
