October 2020
A message from Career Academy Principal, Mrs. Katie Towler
While it feels like we are just getting our feet under us for the 2020-2021 school year, it is already time to start thinking about 2021-2022.
The Career Academy offers hundreds of opportunities for kids to explore careers and interests while earning high school and potentially college credit at no cost to our families. In November we will start a 3-month series that highlights our unique programming. We will include student perspective, the benefits of exploring these pathways while in high school, and more information about how you can get started.
In the meantime if you have questions about our programming please contact the Career Academy directly at 712-279-6668.
Thank you for partnering with us,
A message from Career Academy School Counselor, Mr. Jeff Lucas
***“FAFSA Season” kicked off on October 1st! The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) can be submitted anytime starting October 1st. The FAFSA must be submitted in order to qualify for grants, work-study and loans. Colleges and universities have FAFSA priority deadlines. Make certain you know the priority deadline of all schools you are applying to. If you miss a priority deadline, you may be missing out on financial aid opportunities. If you have questions about completing your FAFSA, contact the Career Academy counseling office or your home high school.
*** Scholarship Postings: Seniors, scholarships this year will be found within your Canvas account in the District Advisory Course. Each high school has their own monthly listing. Click the “Modules” tab to see each monthly list. The Career Academy and home high school counseling offices will be updating periodically. This is new for all three high schools this year. Make sure you are checking each month’s list.
*** Seniors, many of you did not get the opportunity to visit college campuses in the spring due to Covid 19. Colleges are starting to schedule face to face on campus visits now. Virtual visits are still on option as well. If you have yet to take any visits, check in to on campus visit options through the admissions link at the web site of colleges/universities you are considering.
*** Seniors, October is a great time to start submitting your college applications. Remember along with your application for admission, most schools are going to need your official high school transcript and an ACT score. Transcripts can be requested by logging in to your Navigator account (https://iowa.kuder.com/landing-page/) thru Clever. If you have questions or need assistance with transcript requests or sending ACT scores see Mr. Lucas at the Career Academy or your home high school counselor.

Communication and Preparedness
Student and staff safety is of paramount importance in the Sioux City Community School District. For this reason, the District exercises a host of crisis prevention and planning tactics. Should an emergency occur, the school notifies you through our Blackboard phone system. In an emergency, the system calls every phone number associated with your child in order to reach you. The message will give you details about the emergency and provide directions on when/where to pick up your child if the normal school day is altered. Learn more about school safety.
