Note from the Principal - Assessments
Throughout the year our students are assessed multiple times and in multiple ways. Most of these assessments are done in the classroom and are either formal or informal. Each Fall, Winter and Spring our students take the i-Ready diagnostic assessment. The results of this tool help students to create a learning path to best support their academic needs. Each Spring starting in the 3rd grade, all students are assessed through the SBA (Smarter Balanced Assessment). This tool assesses students on grade level standards and provides students and families with an evaluation of where their students perform against these standards. The SBA scores will be available to all families this Friday. I want to remind families that although these formal assessments are very important, they are also just one of a number of tools our teachers use to help provide information to families about the progress of their student. As fall conferences approach, your child's teacher will be sharing information from a number of different assessments but will also be sharing their personal observations of your student. This is a great time for parents to ask questions about their students' academic growth and performance and to clarify the results of standardized assessments. Our teachers are experts in their field of education and truly know how well your child is performing. -- Alex Clauson Principal Saltar's Point Elementary
Note from the Counselor - Bullying Behaviors and Bus Behaviors
After discussing rude and mean behaviors the past two weeks, we will turn our attention to bullying behaviors for the next two weeks and what a student can do if they are a victim or a bystander. The bottom line is that we want kids to tell an adult so we can take care of the behaviors as soon as possible.
Regarding bus behaviors, we recently met with Durham bus drivers here at school to go over expectations and the importance of creating a predictable, safe environment for our students. We discussed what is working for some drivers and what other drivers might want to try. This could mean assigning seats to some students, meetings between the driver, student, and school personnel, and phone calls home to inform parents of what we are noticing to enlist their support. The bus experience is something we take very seriously and we will continue to make it a priority throughout the year.
