Dr. Koop's Newsletter
September 13, 2024
Dear KRS families,
One of the most informative nights of the school year is the KRS Back-to-School Night. This year, the special night will be held on Wednesday, September 18, 2024 from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM. The evening will begin in the multi-purpose room at 7:00 PM. Superintendent Mrs. Danielle Shanley, Director of Elementary Education Dr. Christy O'Connor, PTO co-presidents Mrs. Bobbie Madugula and Mrs. Natalie Polce, and representatives from district organizations will speak. At 7:25 PM, everyone will transition to the classrooms for presentations by the classroom teachers. We adore children, but this is NOT an evening for children. The evening is designed for parents/guardians to learn about the academic programs, school routines, and expectations. We are looking forward to seeing you on the evening of September 18, 2024.
Sincerely,
Dr. Kathy Koop

Important Information about Back-to-School Night - September 18, 2024 7 PM
- The Kings Road School 2024 Back-to-School Night is on Wednesday, September 18, 2024 at 7 PM. The evening begins in the multi-purpose room at 7 PM with introductions and speakers. There will be two identical information sessions offered at 7:30 PM and 8:00 PM for families with more than one child at KRS. Please remember that the night is designed as an opportunity for parents/guardians to learn about grade level programs and expectations. It is not an evening for you to speak with your child's teacher about specific learning concerns. Please contact the teacher at another time if you have questions or concerns in regard to your child's learning.
Star Assessments
Our first window of Star administration is occurring during the month of September. The Star assessments are diagnostic assessments designed to provide educators and parents with important information about a student's progress. Students in grades 1-5 take the Star reading and/or early literacy assessment as well as the Star mathematics assessment benchmarked for their specific grade. To read general information about the Star assessments, parents are encouraged to visit their family resources page.
Kindergarten teachers administer the Star CBMs (Curriculum Based Measures) in both reading and mathematics. The Fall kindergarten reading assessments assess a student's understanding of letters and their sounds, basic phonological awareness, and early decoding. The kindergarten math assessments include recognizing numerals and their value. Often times the CBMs may be administered in other grade levels, on an as-needed individual basis. For more information regarding the Star CBMs, please click here.
Kings Road School is a No Place for Hate School!
Great news! Kings Road School is once again a No Place for Hate School. During the school year, Mr. Levine will conduct No Place for Hate activities with the students. Our first activity will include students reciting and committing to the No Place for Hate pledge.
Code of Conduct, Pledge, Bullying
Last week, during all 3 lunches, Dr. Koop and Mr. Levine reviewed the definition of bullying with the students. This week and next week, Mr. Levine and Dr. Koop will visit all classrooms to review the KRS Code of Conduct and the No Place for Hate pledge. Mr. Levine will continue the discussion throughout the school year during the class guidance lessons. After the students returned to their classrooms, they signed a class paper indicating that they will abide by the No Place for Hate Pledge. Please review the Code of Conduct information (Pages 12-19) contained in the Kings Road School Family and Student handbook with your child at home.

Important Reminders - Arrival and Dismissal
Arrival - School begins at 8:30 AM. The late bell is at 8:35 AM.
(Same Times for All 3 Madison Elementary Schools - To maximize instructional minutes. )
Families are not permitted to enter the school parking lot in their vehicles to drop-off their child.
Car Line - You MUST stay in your car while in the car line. When you leave your car for any reason, you are delaying the drop-off for everyone else in the car line.
If you need assistance, staff members will be available to help.
Dismissal - 3:15 PM
The driveway must be clear of people at all times. If there is no room to wait on the sidewalk, please wait on the grass.
When crossing the parking lot, you must use the crosswalk. Families and students should not be crossing at any other place in the lot.
Please keep in mind that the parking lot cannot be closed during arrival and dismissal. Staff members need access to the parking lot and in the case of an emergency, we need to keep the lot open at all times.
Families must wait on the sidewalk side/school side of the parking lot, NOT the grass area directly adjacent to the parking lot.
Once you connect with your child, you must leave the school property. We enjoy the KRS families, but staying increases the dismissal congestion.
Car Line - You must remain in your car at all times in the car line. If you need assistance, there are staff members there to help you.

Kings Road School PAWS for Good Character
The PTO has graciously supported a grant for a reinforcement system at Kings Road School to motivate students to engage in behavior that is within a targeted character trait each month. Students will receive tickets throughout the school day with their name on it for being "caught" engaging in behavior that we want to see increase. For September, we are catching students being "kind." Each ticket will count toward a chance/opportunity to be selected for the month. The students that are selected, will have an opportunity to take part in a pizza party (with consent from parents/guardians), and have their name recognized on the announcements as well as on our beautiful bulletin board in the gym/cafeteria. Everyone at KRS is excited to motivate our students, as well as contribute to making our school a positive environment!
Start Time of the School Day
The start time for school is 8:30 AM and the late bell will sound at 8:35 AM. The morning announcements will begin each day at 8:35 AM. Please make sure that your child is on time to school each day.
