"Changes and Flowers"
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Spring is in the air! This week we talked about flowers and planting. We continue to talk about change. Instead of metamorphosis, we talked about growth and the life cycle of plants.
We planted grass seeds and talked about the sequence of how to plant. We talked about how plants need soil, water, and sunlight to grow. We out soil in cups, added the seeds, put more soil and watered them. We put them by the window to let them get sunlight. We hope to see the transformation of these seeds to plants during the next few weeks!
Phonological awareness is an auditory skill that involves understanding of the sounds of spoken words. It represents a step towards understanding that letters or groups of letters can represent phonemes or sounds. This understanding is highly predictive of success in beginning reading. We begin the week by working on our literacy skills. We played write it, change it, and read it! Most friends are able to write letters of the alphabet now. We started with a simple three letter word such as c-a-t and sounded it out together, and then we erased the ‘c’ and replaced it with another letter and continued on. Friends started to recognize letter sounds and began to put them together like pieces of a puzzle. Some friends imitated writing letters, some friends identified letters and single letter sounds, while other friends traced and repeated letters of their name.
We talked about planting. We discussed the steps of planting and sequenced pictures of planting. Some friends were able to tell a story and sequence the pictures independently. Some friends needed prompting as to what came first, next, and last. Some friends sorted two pictures from seed to plant. We also talked about some of the tools that are needed to plant. Sequencing is a part of telling a story. Friends are able to recall events and retell them. This works on remembering and ordering. Sequencing is the ability to put the events of a story in the order in which they occurred. Teaching sequencing to early learners is important because logical order of thinking is fundamental to reading and everyday life.

Ideas for Home:
-Read, Read, Read!
-Visit the Arboretum or a garden and talk about the flowers. Describe the shape, color, size, etc.
-Have a picnic in the park. Have your child help prepare the picnic basket!
Word of the Week:
Mature – complete in natural growth or development.
Astronomy - The scientific study of the universe (stars, planets, moon, sun, etc.)
