3rd Grade
Newsletter for March 9, 2017
From the Teacher's Pen
As a past school parent, I do empathize with those who need to scramble for child-care. So I want you to know how much I appreciate being able to use this half day to finalize the report cards. It is difficult to take everything home to work on in a warm environment (been there, done that), only to realize that key student work was left behind (often in student desks). So thank you very much.
Where Did Those Grades Come From?
Often parents will notice that their child's 2nd trimester grades have decreased. Usually, the 1st trimester is more a review of 2nd grade concepts and skills with a bit of a challenge added. For instance, in math we will add and subtract but with larger numbers. The 2nd trimester then dives into the meat of 3rd grade. This is my favorite part, but can prove to be challenging for students. My response to them is that if you knew everything already, then you wouldn't need 3rd grade.
Following is a summary of what was included in your child's report card grades:
- Math Facts: Students need to be fluent with multiplication facts up through the 8 times tables to receive a +3.
- Geography: The geography grade includes reading and understanding maps from the Scholastic News magazines, as well as scores from Passport check days.
- Spelling: Students' personal spelling in other writing is always included in the final grade, not just their score on the weekly tests.
- Reading: Students are graded on their ability to read and understand literature and non-fiction independently. This year the students worked in small reading groups using guidelines I provided. I consider this type of learning an independent endeavor. The reading grade also includes students' A.R. reading as well as reading and responding to Scholastic News questions.
- Religion: Student grades are derived from text book chapter tests, as well as participation and reverence during Mass, religion instruction, and prayer experiences. A +3 grade for the required prayers reflects that your child has successfully recited the tested prayers required during each trimester. When your child has successfully recited all the prayers required for this year, then they will receive a +4. Students who continue to struggle and need frequent promptings will receive a lower grade.
Please jot down questions, concerns, and ideas for how we, as a team, can help your child be the best he or she can be. See you at conferences.
