At the time this newsletter is published our Year 11 students will have just completed four days of adventures, tramping the Kepler Track. All things going well, the weather has behaved and the students and staff went above the Luxmore Hut and ‘over the tops’ to the Iris Burn hut. It is fantastic that we have been able to get into the great outdoors as this is a big part of the NSC culture.

Winter sports season has begun. Thank you to our amazing staff, parents and friends of the school for volunteering your time to give our students the opportunity to train and play sport this winter. We certainly could not do this without you. We look forward to seeing your sporting exploits in the weeks and months to come.

I appreciate your understanding when we had to make the difficult decision to keep students at home on 8 April. Due to staff Covid absences it was impossible to staff the school that day. Staff spent a number of weeks relieving multiple classes and filling support staff roles to keep our school open for instruction. I cannot thank staff enough for their commitment to NSC and our community.

At present approximately half of our students have had Covid. We are expecting another ‘wave’ of infections, (Covid, coughs, colds and influenza) so please be vigilant in promoting healthy hygiene and keep your child at home if they are unwell.

On Friday 6 May, we had our annual cross country event. This year our students flew through the course dressed as superheroes.

As a school we wanted to support our local fire department by raising money to help them compete at the yearly Sky Tower run because they are our real life superheroes.

Along with our superhero themed mufti day the Year 13's had a sausage sizzle on Thursday to further raise money for this amazing cause.

The Vision Hearing Technicians from Population Health team, Southern District Health will be visiting the College to screen all year seven students for distance vision on Thursday 26th May 2022.

Distance Vision (Amblyopia & Hyperopia)

This determines how well your child is able to see at a distance. It involves reading an eye chart.

(This free vision check is not required if student wears glasses and/or is currently under care of an optometrist or eye specialist).

If you do not wish your child to be screened please fill out an opt-out slip, which are available at the school office before our visit.

Congratulations to the following students who finished in the top 3 of their age group. It was a most successful day, with great weather and atmosphere. It was awesome to see everyone out giving it a go with a positive attitude.

The Basketball season is underway. With NSC having 3 teams in the competition. Senior Boys A, Senior Girls B and Intermediate Boys. All 3 teams had their first game last week, coming away with things to work on as teams for the season.

The NSC Beanbags were up against Menzies for the first round, and although the game ended with a loss of 40-82, the boys showed impressive resilience and enthusiasm.

Through practice and expert guidance from our coach Adam (who is a Beanbag himself), we look forward to the rest of the season.

Teams have been training for the past few weeks, with many starting pre-season games this Saturday.

There are a number of rugby players who are not yet registered with Sporty. Please note if your child is not registered they cannot take to the field on Saturday.

Please also note that you are to register with NSC, and all players will then be transferred to CSC by Rugby Southland once everyone is registered.

We have 3 Hockey teams who are playing in the Invercargill Junior and Secondary Schools Competition underway next week. Invercargill Hockey are in the process of working through different solutions as to how they are going to run the competition successfully throughout the season with the use of only 1 turf (due to the 2nd turf being under reconstruction). We will keep you informed as information comes to hand.

This year NSC also has 2 teams participating in the Eastern Southland Hockey competition on Sundays.

On Sunday 8th May they got to play their first game and thankfully avoided the rain.

Maroon coached by Janette Collins had a 5-3 win. Amelia Bullmore scored the 5th goal just before the hooter. The team played well for the first game of the season. It was great to see you listening and moving towards the ball.

Yellow Coached by Nic Roy had a 4-2 win. Player of the day went to the whole team. Congratulations. Good start and connection to other players with their passing.

Football training, for both boys and girls, is underway on Tuesdays after school. Mr Webb is taking these sessions. We are still looking for more players to join the teams, so please come and join in. Games won’t be happening until later in the term, so there’s plenty of time to work on fitness and skills.

Please also make sure you have joined up with the alert sport groups specific to your child/ren to receive relevant notifications.

A further reminder that the Ministry of Education will help families that have little or no internet connectivity at home. Please contact the Office so that we can help before any distance teaching and learning occurs.

The Government has extended the increased income limits for hardship assistance until Thursday 30 June.

This means more casual or part-time workers, or people who aren’t already getting financial support, will continue to be eligible for help with their immediate or emergency costs. This is especially important for those who need direct help as part of the COVID-19 welfare response.

Open Days for both campuses will extend across Friday and Saturday to give students and their whānau the option to experience the best of what the University has to offer on the day that suits them best. The dates for these are:

· Tauranga campus: Friday 17 and Saturday 18 June

· Virtual Open Day: Wednesday 17 August

The Friday events are tailored for school leavers, but we also invite students to attend Saturday with their parents and whānau, at one or both campuses. On the day, students can:

· Attend information sessions, mini lectures and workshops

· Chat to our staff and students

· Enjoy live entertainment and food stalls
