East End 3rd Graders Visited by 3D Pets
Third-grade students at East End Elementary School embarked on an extraordinary learning experience Tuesday morning, diving into the fascinating world of animal prosthetics. The students were introduced to Trip, a spirited four-year-old Rottweiler, who—along with his owner Lydia Mindek, Director of Operations, and Alex Tholl, co-founder and CEO of 3D Pets—demonstrated the life-changing impact of veterinary prosthetics.
3D Pets, a Bloomingdale-based company specializing in custom prosthetics, orthotics, and mobility solutions for animals, brought their mission to life in the school’s community room. Trip, a real-life success story of the company's innovative work, showcased his full limb prosthesis, which enhances his mobility and overall quality of life.
The event was part of an enrichment program led by gifted and talented educators Mrs. Kathleen Landadio and Ms. Mary Nieves. As part of their curriculum, the third graders have been learning about the engineering design process and applying their knowledge by designing prosthetics for their own “pet clients” – stuffed animals.
Students were captivated as Mindek and Tholl guided them through the intricate process of creating animal prosthetics, from casting and 3D scanning to prototyping and final assembly. The students discovered how digital design and 3D printing technologies are used to develop devices that are both functional and comfortable for a wide range of animals, including dogs, ducks, tortoises, and even pigs.
One of the most exciting moments of the assembly was witnessing Trip in action, both with and without his prosthetic. Seeing firsthand how prosthetic technology can transform an animal’s life left a lasting impression on the young audience. Students also had the opportunity to examine various prototypes, sparking their creativity as they prepare for their own design projects.
“This assembly not only brought classroom lessons to life but also ignited a sense of wonder and compassion in our young engineers,” said Mrs. Landadio. “We are incredibly grateful to 3D Pets for volunteering their time and expertise to show our students how engineering can improve animal welfare.”
East End Elementary extends its thanks to 3D Pets for their generosity and inspiration, ensuring students continue to engage in hands-on learning experiences that bridge science, technology, and compassion.
East End Celebrates Black History Month
Black History Month Activities
North Plainfield High School Step Team Assembly
On February 25, East End School will welcome the North Plainfield High School Step Team for an exciting assembly showcasing the art of stepping. Stepping is a dynamic, percussive dance form rooted in African American culture, with origins tracing back to the rhythmic communication and storytelling traditions of African communities. It gained prominence in Black fraternities and sororities, where it became a powerful expression of unity, pride, and resilience. As part of our Black History Month celebration, this performance will highlight the cultural significance of stepping and its connection to African American heritage. Students will experience the energy, discipline, and creativity of this unique art form while learning about its historical importance.
Double Dutch Interactive Demonstration - Grades 2 - 4
East End School will host an exciting interactive Double Dutch demonstration for our 2nd, 3rd, and 4th graders on Friday, February 28 during their Specials class, led by a professional Double Dutch organization. Double Dutch, a jump rope style involving two ropes turning in opposite directions, has deep roots in Black culture and history. While its origins date back to ancient civilizations, it became a staple in African American communities, especially in New York City, where it evolved into a competitive and creative sport. Double Dutch is a symbol of teamwork, rhythm, and perseverance—values that align with the resilience and contributions of Black Americans throughout history. As part of our Black History Month celebration, this event will give students the opportunity to learn the techniques, rhythm, and joy of this vibrant tradition while honoring its cultural significance.

Dental Health Visit Recap
This week we participated in Dental Health Visits, where our students had the opportunity to learn valuable tips for maintaining healthy teeth. Key Takeaways from the Visit:
1. Brushing and Flossing Techniques
Our dental health expert demonstrated the correct way to brush and floss, emphasizing the importance of brushing three times a day for at least two minutes and flossing once a day.
2. Healthy Eating for Healthy Teeth
The students learned that a balanced diet plays a key role in maintaining strong teeth. We talked about limiting sugary snacks and drinks, as well as the importance of eating foods like fruits, vegetables, and dairy for stronger enamel and healthier gums.
3. Visiting the Dentist Regularly
The children were reminded to visit the dentist at least twice a year for a checkup and cleaning.
We encourage all parents to continue these conversations at home and help remind your child about the importance of brushing, flossing, and eating healthy to protect their smiles. If you have any questions or need tips for making dental health routines easier for your child, feel free to reach out.
Thank you for your support in helping us promote good health habits!
