PRINCIPAL'S NOTE: MRS. HENRY
WOW! I can not believe it is MAY already! This school year has gone by so fast! We are watching our 8th graders ready themselves for high school and our 7th graders have grown so much since August!
State testing for Barton has been completed, however we are still trying to get make-ups done for those that were absent during testing. We celebrated Wednesday with a Testing Reward day for students that worked hard, completed their tests, and had good behavior during testing! Students and teachers enjoyed the day of fun!
Please help us make the end of this year as great as it can be! We have a lot of things coming up and need students to remember the school rules and follow them. A lot of issues with cell phones are occurring. This should not be a reason students get in trouble. Cell phones need to be off and in their backpack while at school.
Also, just a reminder that student attendance, grades, and STAR scores will determine students that qualify for exam exemptions. The attendance record for exam exemption began on Monday, January 8. In addition to attendance, the grade in the class must be above a C for both 9-weeks AND the STAR scores will have to show improvement from the middle of the year to the end of the year tests. STAR testing will be May 3 & 6. Exam dates/times are below. Students MUST take final exams ON THE DATES SPECIFIED unless they have earned exemption. If there are circumstances outside of your control that cause a student to miss an exam, they must come on exam make-up day to take the exam(s).

FEATURE ARTICLES
April Fool's Day by Abby Davis
You’re not reading right now….April Fools!
April fools is an annual day for pranks. Every single April 1st, you can prank someone and tell them, “April fools!”
No one’s pulling your leg when they tell you it's not really known how April fools started. There are many theories, but we don't have enough knowledge about it to know for sure. One theory is that France is responsible for the day of joking. It's tied to a calendar change in 1582, said on the History Channel. France put into effect the Gregorian calendar, shifting the start of the New Year from the spring equinox, and it typically falls around April 1st. We can’t know for sure if this theory is correct though.
We interviewed Andria Gleghorn, assistant principal, about what she does to bring April fools into our school life, here at Barton. Gleghorn said, “I created a fake study detail list this year with students on it that NEVER get in trouble--when I taught 3rd grade (to several of these 8th graders) I gave them a fake spelling test on April Fool's day in 2019!” This event was very laughable!
April fools is a great time to have some very lighthearted fun with friends, family, and fellow students, or coworkers!
National Garden Month by Jasmine Edwards
National Garden Month is a very important month for our nation. National Garden Month helps with many different things. National Garden Month can benefit your physical health, benefit the Earth, and it can help your mental health.
National Garden Month can benefit your health. It combines physical activity with social interaction and exposure to nature and sunlight. Sunlight lowers blood pressure as well as increasing vitamin D levels in the summer.
National Garden Month can also benefit the Earth. It can minimize pollutants in air, water, and soil. It also supports pollinators and natural enemies as well as saves energy and water.
National Garden Month can benefit your mental health. Gardening helps improve memory, cognitive abilities, task initiation, language skills, and socialization. It can also help with rehabilitation.
National Garden Month can help in many aspects. Gardening is very important for the Earth. If you are able to garden anywhere near your house, it could help the land around your house.
