COUNSELOR'S CORNER
Cowboy Character
We have all heard Aretha Franklin sing, “R-E-S-P-E-C-T. Find out what it means to me.” The question is, what does it mean to YOU? Does being treated with respect mean being treated with courtesy? with dignity? Does it mean having your feelings taken into consideration? Does it mean being listened to?
In New Zealand, the native people have a saying: “Never spend time with people who don’t respect you.”
That’s good advice. Remember this: if another person is treating you badly, respect yourself enough to walk away. You deserve better. In the end, they’ll respect you for respecting yourself.
On the other side of the coin, if you are treating others with disrespect, try being more respectful. You will discover that others will begin treating you with more respect. That’s the way it works!
RODEO Tip of the Week
Advice to help children develop a strong work ethic
Ø Model effort and a strong work ethic
Take a pledge, especially this month, to show your child how you don’t give up on a task even when things get difficult. Before starting a new task, make sure your child overhears you say: “I’m going to persevere until I am successful.” Modeling the trait is always the number one teaching method.
Ø Instill a “Growth Mindset”
Research shows that kids who persist and excel recognize that success comes from hard work and practice, not luck or money or genetics. In fact, if kids believe that performance is due to effort, they will be less likely to give up and will work harder when the going gets tough. A crucial parenting secret to give our kids an edge on success is to stretch their growth mindset. Here are three ways:
~ Use real examples — folks such as Jerry Rice, Pele, Vanessa and Serena Williams, Michael Jordan — who reached the top because of hours and hours of practice. Identify your child’s passion – music, sports, art, writing, or whatever-and then use an example of your child’s hero who emulates a growth mindset.
~ Teach your kid the 10,000-Hour Rule: Did you know that studies found that the best artists, musicians, swimmers and skaters practiced at least 10,000 hours, or ten years, to reach their success? Success is all a matter of how hard you work.
~ Stress practice: It will get easier…you just have to stick to it!

PSHS Golf Tryouts - Fall 2016
Tryouts for Plano Sr. golf team will be held the first week of school. The first day we will meet in the Lecture Hall at Plano Sr. High in Bldg. B, just off Independence, north side of campus. The second day we will begin tryouts at Twin Creeks, then Watters Creek the next two days. Make sure you have a current physical from your doctor and a medical history completed before you can tryout. All these forms can be found to on our website. planogolf.org.
Boys should be able to shoot around 90 or better and girls shoot around 100 or better. This is a golf team, not a PE beginners class. You will need to find your own transportation to the golf course each day. You should also play in Jr. tournaments once a month during the school year and in at least 6 over the summer. Information is located on our website for these events. Please email Coach O’Kelley if you have more questions. Thank you and good luck!
