Senior Seminar Speaker
Note: Dryden High School seniors have the opportunity to take Senior Seminar, a class offered for the eighth year in a row in conjunction with the Michigan College Access Network (MCAN).
MCAN's mission is to increase college readiness, participation, and completion in Michigan, particularly among low-income students, first-generation college-going students, and students of color. Further, the goal of the College Planning Course is to increase college completion by lowering barriers that prevent students from getting to and through college, including Social Capital, Academic Preparation, College Knowledge, and Affordability. College is defined as the attainment of education beyond high school, including postsecondary certificates and academic degrees.
Weekly guest speaker topics may range from specific educational opportunities to post-secondary life skills as well as the knowledge necessary to be productive members of a community, among others.
Macomb Community College
Teri Pagano from Macomb Community College (MCC) came to speak to our class this past Friday and tell us a little bit more about what Macomb has to offer. At first, she talked about her children and their finding the right college but also a little insight about FAFSA. She said that even if we don’t think we qualify still apply for it because you never know what can happen. Other than that she really didn’t talk much about her personal life. Along with all this, she talked about the college itself and some of the services and perks it has.
The first thing I liked was how she mentioned the university center. I have been attending Macomb as a dual enrollment student for some time and I had no idea what the university center was. It’s basically colleges inside a college. She said that you can continue to earn credits towards your degree but take them through different colleges at the Macomb campus. For example, if I was going for nursing and wanted to continue my education but didn’t want to drive to Central, I could go to the university center and sign up for Central Michigan nursing classes or Michigan State nursing classes. I like this because it allows the students to stay at a community college longer but also allows them to several a lot of money.
The second thing I liked was how she talked about some of the services they offer. Being in high school, going from high school teachers to professors is a big jump. Macomb has a reading and writing studio where you can go get your paper critiqued and looked at. I am glad she talked about this because this is something I wasn’t very familiar with and being in dual enrollment I want to use all my resources. Another one of the services is the learning center. Pagano said that this is where you can go and get tutored for free and that this is also available online. I like how she mentioned that it is online because it is beneficial for those who don’t have time to drive down to campus but also those who may not have a license yet.
I do wish she would have talked about what is available for those people who already have their associate's degree or will have it by the time they graduate. Aside from the university center, I want to know what else I could do. Maybe the university center doesn't have my major or I am looking to save a little bit of money. While the dual enrollment program is nice it also takes away community colleges for us and I want to learn more about how I can continue at a community college while having my associate's already.
Overall, I really liked Pagano. She was nice and tried to interact with the class. She asked questions about what we knew so that she could educate us on what we didn’t know. While we were not necessarily “awake” for her, she still found ways to interact with us and make it enjoyable to listen and watch.
