Principal's Message
Dear God
We praise you for your servant, Mary MacKillop,
who gave her life to serve you,
looking after the poor and oppressed.
May we continue to share her vision.
Help us to follow her
and carry out our own mission of service
and kindness to others.
Amen
Student Well-Being: Friendship Day
What a fabulous day we had yesterday at St Jude's, celebrating all things friendship!
We took part in a range of fun activities as we learnt what it means to be a great friend, and how to be proactive in working through our disagreements with others in a positive and empowering way.
We learnt the difference of situations between friends that result in negative feelings (friendship fire) or when someone is intentionally unkind to someone else (mean on purpose). More importantly, we learnt strategies to assist us in dealing with others in a positive way when there is a friendship fire or when someone is mean to us on purpose.
Our URStrong program is in place from Kindy - Year 6. It aims to inspire our students to feel empowered and to develop a strong sense of self-worth, while managing the most important thing - their friendships. Please feel free to ask your child's teacher about the URStrong program if you would like more information.
Please check out the UR Strong section of our newsletter below for details of our FREE PARENT WORKSHOP. This workshop will be held online, so you can join in from home!
Mary Mackillop Liturgy
Our Friendship Day concluded with a liturgy celebrating the feast of St Mary of the Cross. Mary MacKillop is Australia's first Saint. She cared about people that no-one else was looking after, especially children who had no school to go to, the elderly, the sick and also people who had nowhere to live.
With Father Julian Tenison Woods, she opened her very first school in an old stable, eventually begining the Congregation of the Sisters of St Joseph.
At St Jude's, we look to Mary MacKillop as a role model of how to treat others with kindness and compassion and remember her dedication to 'never see a need without doing something about it'.
Influenza
We have had several students diagnosed with Influenza over the past couple of weeks. Influenza can be spread easily to others and therefore, it is important that you monitor your child and keep them home if they are suffering from flu like symptoms such as fever, muscle aches and pains, sore throat, dizziness, and cough.
Farewell
We have had 2 students in Year 3 and 4 visiting us from China for the past four weeks. They have been practising their English and learning about life in Australia. We have also been able to learn a little about life in China from them. It has been wonderful having them at our school and we are sad that they are heading back to China this weekend. Safe travels Cindy, Jeff, and your families. We hope that you come back and visit us again next year!

Friendship Day
We had a fun day yesterday for our Friendship Day. We created friendship outlines and bracelets, wrote warm fuzzy messages to our friends and took part in a friendship obstacle course. We also did lots of team building games, tug-o-war, and played games with new friends on our chat mats. We enjoyed learning how to solve problems with our friends and can't wait to put our new skills into action.
CEWA Child Safe Framework
Have you heard of the CEWA Child Safe Framework?
Last week we looked at 3 key concepts that underpin this framework. This week, we will look at the nine elements that combined, help us to make decisions surrounding child safety in the school.
These nine elements include:
Support and Healing: Responding to those who have been injured or hurt through abuse and harm and to assist them to heal.
Voice of the Child: Recognises each child and young personโs right to be heard and to have a voice in all that happens to them.
Culture: All members of the school community share responsibility for, and actively promote an environment that prioritises the best interests of children and young people.
Governance and Leadership: School leaders understand, create and promote environments that are safe, supportive and engaging. They make their decisions based on the best interests of students.
Policy and Procedures: Structures and processes that are accessible, consistent and transparent. Policies must be understood, implemented and actioned everyday.
Human Resource Practices: These practices assist our schools and care centres to identify the most suitable people to work with our students and to provide appropriate training.
Risk Management: Proactively identifying and limiting potential risks.
Investigation and Reporting: The development and implementation of processes that are transparent, fair and clearly understood by the school community.
Quality Assurance: Systematic, continual improvement is evident through ongoing evaluation and assessment.
Wishing you a lovely weekend!

Feast of St Mary of the Cross (MacKillop)
On Thursday night, our Head Boy (Josh) and Head Girl (Ruby) accompanied Mrs Fonseca and myself to St Mary's Cathedral to represent St Jude's at a special liturgical celebration for the Feast of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop. During the celebration, there was a surprise presentation in commemoration of LifeLink's 30th Anniversary where the Primary School's LifeLink projects were projected onto the face of St Mary's Cathedral. It was quite spectacular!
Festival of Friendship
Yesterday, our students took part in a 'Festival of Friendship' on the Feast of St Mary of the Cross (MacKillop). This day was centred around friendship and what it means to have positive relationships. Students from across the school took part in a variety of fun filled activities and concluded with a special liturgy with a focus on St Mary of the Cross (MacKillop) and friendship.
The Language of Friendship - ONLINE Parent Workshop
Next week, Tuesday 20 August (6:00 pm - 7:15 pm), we invite all of our parents to take part in an ONLINE workshop which has been paid for by our school. This means that this workshop is FREE to all our parents!
This session gives parents a common "language" for talking about friendship which is consistent with our school's approach. Through interactive activities, parents will learn strategies to support their child in fostering healthy, feel-good relationships.
