The grant amount available per county is $400. Counties may choose to do projects together – 2 counties can apply for $800 for a combined project – 3 counties can apply for $1200 for a combined project. The max amount available for a single project is $1200.
Note: If you received a grant in this past 4-H year, you are required to submit a report on the project before you are eligible to apply for this year’s grant opportunity.
So what is a Mini Grant? Each year, the State 4-H Leaders of SD award Mini-Grants across the state to county or 4-H club projects. The purpose of the 4-H Grants Program is to address youth needs at the local level. The State 4-H Leaders of SD recognize that the greatest impact of 4-H occurs at the local level, usually between youth and 4-H volunteers.
As you review the criteria for a mini grant, please keep in mind how you might give the mini grant committee a vision of your project and how it will impact 4-H kids. Provide the details of your plan as it relates to the bullet points below. This information is critical in the decision-making process of choosing who will receive a mini grant and how much.
Criteria for awarding funds include:
* Potential for youth involvement in the planning and implementation of the project.
* Potential impact on addressing youth issues at a local level through either a traditional or nontraditional setting.
* Potential for increasing life skill outcomes for youth.
* Potential for reaching expanded youth audiences e.g. at-risk low income, single parent families, other cultures, disabled, etc.
* Potential for transitioning new youth audiences into more “traditional” or ongoing 4-H programs.
Grants funds can be used to purchase educational materials and supplies, expenses/honorariums for speakers, travel and training. Generally, snacks for refreshments, give-away items, e.g. t-shirts, etc. and building rental are not approved expenditures. Monies can’t be used for capital equipment or hardware (defined as items and material with a life expectancy of greater than five years) or building drives.
Annual Volunteer Renewal Process
Annual Volunteer Renewal Process
Jenae Hansen-Gross, SD 4-H Volunteer Development Field Specialist
South Dakota 4-H volunteers are essential to the mission of our program. These caring adult mentors bring forth many skills and hours of dedicated service each year to help strengthen the lives of young people. If you were a volunteer in the 2023-24 4-H program year, thank you so much!
South Dakota 4-H volunteers serve one-year terms, renewable indefinitely so long as both parties (i.e., typically the volunteer and lead county 4-H professional) wish to continue the relationship. The returning volunteer indicates this interest by re-enrolling in 4-HOnline after October 1st. At this point, the returning volunteer’s status is “pending.” In most cases, the lead local 4-H professional will quickly approve and the 4-HOnline status will then say “active.” This signifies the renewal of the relationship for the 4-H year ahead.
If the lead local 4-H professional does not wish to continue the relationship or wishes to discuss role restrictions or alterations, they will communicate this to the volunteer. Each year, a few 4-H volunteers are not renewed for service.
Reminder: All returning volunteers need to indicate their interest in returning. The preferred renewal date is before December 15, but required before volunteers are allowed to do any 4-H programming or events and before September 1st. Otherwise, should they wish to return at a future time, they will have to re-start the volunteer process from scratch and pay a $75 lapsed background check fee.
Interested in becoming a new volunteer this 4-H year? Contact Jennifer Ringkob at the office anytime, preferably before April 1, to learn more.
