Honoring Kati
It is with deep sadness that I share the passing of our beloved teacher, Kati, who took her last breath as the clock rolled into the new year. The courageous and graceful way Kati and her family have faced her battle with cancer has been an inspiration to all of us, as has the way they have lived—filled with strength, love, and dignity.
To show our support during this difficult time, we have established a 529 education fund for each of Kati's children, Karsten and Henrik. These funds will help support their future educational needs. If you would like to contribute:
1. Go to Ugift529.com.
2. Enter the Ugift code:
- Karsten's Ugift code: N8X-G1B
- Henrik's Ugift code: 86Z-J5V
3. Enter your name and the amount of your gift.
4. Make your gift via electronic funds transfer or check.
There are no fees with Ugift; your entire gift will go to the account. You can make a secure gift contribution at any time you'd like.
As we process this loss, we will remember Kati's lasting impact on our school community and work to support her family with the same love and kindness they so freely shared with all of us.
Bringing Our Vision to Life
Cultivating a Strong Sense of Self
At Great Expectations School, we celebrate the unique qualities of every child. Our mission is to nurture each student’s individuality by fostering confidence, emotional resilience, and a strong sense of identity—cornerstones of success in an ever-changing world. Guided by the Responsive Classroom approach, we strive to create an environment where social, emotional, and academic growth are equally valued. This approach aligns well with Howard Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences, recognizing that children bring a range of strengths and ways of learning to the classroom. Whether through linguistic, logical, musical, physical, interpersonal, intrapersonal, or naturalistic talents, every child is given opportunities to shine.
By intentionally providing opportunities for students to reflect on their strengths and values, designing activities that honor the diverse ways children understand and engage with the world. Whether through reflective journaling that taps into linguistic intelligence, mindfulness exercises that nurture intrapersonal intelligence, or creative outlets that highlight spatial and musical intelligences, students deepen their self-awareness while feeling supported within a caring community. These activities not only cultivate a sense of belonging but also empower students to embrace their individuality with pride. By celebrating their unique perspectives, we help students develop self-knowledge and empathy, fostering an understanding of themselves and others while building meaningful connections within their community.
Parent Tip: Celebrate Your Child’s Individuality
As a parent or guardian, you play a key role in helping your child cultivate a strong sense of self. A simple practice like recognizing their unique strengths can have a profound effect. Try saying, “I love the way you approach challenges with creativity” or “You’re so thoughtful in how you care for others.” These affirmations reinforce their confidence and deepen your connection.
By celebrating what makes each child special—both at school and at home—we build a culture of confidence, compassion, and self-expression. Together we can empower every child to recognize their full potential and navigate the world with a sense of purpose and belonging.
Thank you for sharing your kiddos with us!
