LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL
The Winter Bazaar was so much fun! It was so lovely to see and feel so many people, all the ages, enjoying each other. Thanks so much to all who participated by attending, to all our students and families for your creativity and ingenuity, and especially, to all our volunteers who coordinated, set up, took down (including the Book Fair!), made treats for the bake sale and, for creating such a great raffle.
Up next is the 3rd-5th grade Winter Showcase tomorrow night. Please see details for 3rd - 5th grade student arrival times for the music performances below. It’s been so much fun watching students rehearsing their songs over the past weeks and watching their confidence and knowledge grow. It’s going to be such a joy to listen and watch them shine! Thank you Mr. Cunningham for creating this wonderful experience for our students and community!
Next week on Thursday afternoon is our SUN Showcase. Students are practicing their performances during SUN School and it will be so much fun to watch them share their learning and spirit from SUN term classes next week.
Our teachers are busy leading amazing learning and students are busy thinking, talking about ideas and reading, writing and solving problems.1st graders are learning and writing about “creature features”, for example, details about the eyes of a snake, while 3rd graders are finding evidence in a text they read about Galileo, then forming paragraphs about why “the stars had left his eyes”... he wasn’t believed and he was afraid). Both 2nd and 3rd grades are using different colored highlighters to help them identify and organize topic statements and evidence sentences. 4th graders are finding specific details about the climate, weather or terrain of mountain ranges in texts and figuring out how to interpret, organize and write about what they find. 5th graders are writing their own versions of “the next chapter” in a text they’re reading (Number The Stars) and writing their own “Goldilocks and The Three Bears” script based on a mock trial (The State of Oregon vs. Goldilocks). And kindergartners are comparing versions of gingerbread stories using graphic organizers to write their very own version…adding labels to illustrations and learning why we use spaces between words.
It’s such a busy time of year and one in which regular routines and schedules often change for many families, which is fun but also unsettling for children. And, this time of year is also stressful for many. Everything you can do to have your child get plenty of sleep and the other things that help them be regulated, helps us ensure all children can work hard on things like the above, and ensure all have good days at school. Also, if you can make sure toys stay home. Thank you and have a great remainder of the week!
Warmly,
Lisa

THERE'S STILL TIME TO SIGN UP FOR OBOB THROUGH THE END OF THIS WEEK
There's still time for your child to join an Oregon Battle of the Books team! Children competing in Oregon Battle of the Books read select books from the OBOB booklist, and compete in teams to answer questions in matches that pit their knowledge of the story against teams in other schools.
If your child is interested in joining this free competitive book trivia tournament, you can sign them up with this link. If you are unsure or have questions about OBOB, there will be an information session on December 12th at 2:45PM that you are welcome to attend. Or, you can send questions to areltaobob@gmail.com.
You can find the list of books here! Practice matches (pool play) will be held during the school day on Thursdays during the OBOB season instead of after school. By doing so, we hope this allows many more students the flexibility to participate. Books are available at the school library but you can click here to see the books on the Multnomah County Library website, including audiobooks. To go to the Arleta OBOB website, click here!
Registration is extended through Sunday, December 15th and a new schedule will be sent out afterwards.

TIPS FOR SMOOTHER MORNINGS
Let’s face it: getting to school on time and ready to learn can be extremely hard. But did you know that missing even a small amount of school regularly can result in gaps in learning and make it harder to grasp new concepts, especially for our earliest learners? Arleta is currently averaging 34 tardies per day, and the Arleta Site Council – a coalition of administrators, teachers, and parents that identify ways to support the school community - would like to help our students thrive by reducing that number.
Towards that end we are running this column in the digest with handy tips to help families get out the door. Every family is different, and all tactics may not work for yours, but please check back here each week for tips to make the mornings smoother for you and your students.
Try These Tips For Smoother Mornings
- Place shoes by the door every night; maybe this could be the last thing each night before brushing teeth.
- Try to keep grab-and-go food on hand in case you need to eat on the run: toast, dry Eggo, a banana, PB&J, or a granola bar are all good ideas.
- Buddy up with a neighbor family to come to school together. Coming to school together with friends can be a great motivator!
PTA NEWSLETTER GOES PAPER!
Keep an eye out in your student's backpack for a new monthly newsletter from the PTA. The newsletter is meant to highlight upcoming events and important news, all on a handy one-page flyer that can be hung on your fridge. Let us know what you think at ArletaSchoolPTA@gmail.com!
MISSING SOMETHING?
Items and owners have been reunited, but there are still plenty of stragglers! Are you missing something? Check out the Lost and Found rack while you're at school and retrieve your missing thing! There are six pairs of glasses at the lost and found in the office. Are one of them yours? Come find out!
