South Charlotte Shockwave
Week of November 18-22nd
Principal's Message
Good Afternoon Parents,
We had another great week at South Charlotte. Our winter sports teams had try-outs. There was a large turnout for the try-outs and the coaches had to make tough decisions. Congratulations to the members of the boys and girls basketball teams. We stand to be competitive against all teams this year. Please come out and support our student-athletes.
Kindness week concluded and it was well received by staff and students. Each day the students were awarded Shocker Slips for acts of kindness. At lunch, a drawing was held for prizes: gift cards, experiences, privileges andβ¦.the grand prize today was PRINCIPAL for the DAY! I am excited to turn over my walkie and keys to these great students for a day. Congratulations to the winners. We will definitely offer this again. The students seemed to really get excited about it.
Tuesday night at the Board of Education meeting, CMS began the progress-monitoring phase of the strategic plan with a deep dive into literacy data. Dr. Hill shared a special video message with employees and the community about this important work. Additionally, Chief Strategy and Innovation Officer Beth Thompson also provided an overview about progress monitoring.
In addition, CMS began the report on Phase 2 of the Comprehensive Data Review. During this phase, district leaders will facilitate sessions for the Board of Education to review data related to the Boardβs Student Assignment Policy, A-ASGP. The Board will hear presentations from Charlotte Works, Magnet Schools of America, and Cropper GIS (10-year demographic study). Additionally, the Board of Education will receive an update about our 2023 Bond Projects as there is a clear intersection.
Dr. Hill knows the Comprehensive Data Review is a high-interest topic for our families, staff, and entire community. CMS is committed to a strategic and transparent process. The Comprehensive Data Review website is the source of truth. All data sources, BOE Questions/Responses, and Recordings from BOE meetings will be posted on the Comprehensive Review website. It is linked below.
I hope all of you have a great week.

Counselor's Corner
Did you know that South Charlotte Middle School has a decade long tradition of focusing on kindness and how we treat others? Instead of anti-bullying β and telling students what not to do, we focus on telling them what TO do. SCMS has four core principles of kindness that we adhere to: Speak Out, Show Kindness, Respect Everyone, and Respond Appropriately. This year, to kick off the Kindness Campaign, students were asked each day in every block to think about one of the core principles. They discussed the definition, gave examples, talked about how they could show that kindness principle during the upcoming week. This week, please discuss with your SCMS student those four principles to see what they learned and how they can be kind in middle school. We will continue this discussion of kindness during the year, and will be celebrating in the spring with an assembly and surprise guest speakers!

PTO
Helping Hands is a great opportunity for our community to give back. Many of our families at SCMS need financial assistance as the holidays are approaching. These donations will help our families, our SCMS kids, have a better holiday.
The donations can be anonymous and the families receiving will be anonymous as well.
SCMS PTO has sponsored this program each year and the counselors facilitate the program for us. PLEASE...any amount will help. We are trying to collect all donations before the Thanksgiving Holiday. Donate here: https://www.zeffy.com/en-US/fundraising/40278898-7794-4994-95d0-f1cab6d9c273
