From the Principal's Pen

I hope you have all had a wonderful February recess! We are looking forward to welcoming the students back to school Tuesday, February 18th. The educators and the students needed the break in order to prepare for the fast pace that will take place at school from now to the end of the school year! We are over halfway through the school year already!

As you know our staff has been very focused on increasing Parent Engagement at JC this school year. We devoted extra time to parents in the fall preparing for the fall conferences. The feedback on those conferences was very positive from both parents and teachers. The GREAT NEWS is we will now be offering winter conferences to ALL parents. This is a new initiative for our school and something being offered as a pilot only at Julian Curtiss and New Lebanon Schools. Parent/Teacher conferences will be offered on March 11th from 1:00- 6:00 pm and March 18th from 2:45-6:45. March 11th is an Early Release Day for the students. Students will be released at 12:45. You will be receiving notices and schedules from your child’s teacher(s) by Friday, February 21st. Please sign up for your winter conference as soon as you receive notice from your child’s teacher.

Being informed about what your child does at school and family support of learning at home is important for ALL children. Education is a team effort - teacher, student, and family!

Ms. Gabrielle Duncan will be joining Julian Curtiss as the maternity leave replacement for ALP teacher Mrs. Ariel Wilshaw. Her biography brief is below. We look forward to welcoming her to JC!

My start in GPS began as a leave replacement at EMS, teaching 6th grade LA and Social Studies. I then moved across the street to Riverside School (elementary being my true passion) where I taught for 3 years. During this time I was also the girls' lacrosse and field hockey coach at the high school. I then moved to Parkway School, where I have since been teaching third grade for the last seven years. Here I served as the Learning Facilitator and was a member of our School Data Team. For many years, I taught kindergarten summer school at both the Cos Cob and Hamilton Avenue locations. I am greatly looking forward to returning to the classroom and joining the staff at JC!

There will be a meet and greet for the parents of Mrs. Wilshaw's students on February 21st at 8:00 am in the ALP room.

Kindergarten Registration for the 2020-2021 school year is coming up soon! If you know of new families to the Julian Curtiss district, please make sure they know about the Kindergarten Parent Presentation on March 9th at 9:30 am.

Many thanks to everyone in our school community who contributed to the "Change the World" fundraiser for Love of Orphans Foundation before the break. With your help, the JC Service club raised nearly $500 to help orphaned, disabled, and underprivileged children in Bogotá, Colombia.

I was able to use the funds to directly purchase much-needed supplies for the children, and both the Luz y Vida staff and I are very grateful for your support!

When your child is going to be absent for the day, please make sure to call the Main Office at (203) 869-1896. Dismissal changes need to be made through School Dismissal Manager. Please do not email the classroom teacher regarding absences or dismissal changes. If the teacher is absent we have no way of accessing the emails and will not be aware of the changes. Thank you for your cooperation.
