QUOTES OF THE WEEK
“Even as kids reach adolescence, they need more than ever for us to watch over them. Adolescence is not about letting go. It is about hanging on during a very bumpy ride.” —Ron Taffel
“Our kids want us to give them a safe space to process their feelings more than they want us to fix all their problems.” – Shelly Robinson
A Note from the Principal
Even as the "bumpy ride" of middle school goes, this past week at Day was a challenging one for some members of our community. Several incidents underscored the need for each of us, as the adults in our children’s lives, to stay engaged in supporting healthy choices and the creation of a safe community space for learning and development.
On Friday, students reported that someone had written the word "Hamas" in on of our bathrooms at Day. Hamas, as most of you are aware, is the terrorist group that led an attack on Israel, committing unspeakable atrocities and acts of violence on October 7th. We are very proud of the students for reporting this incident immediately to a faculty member as they knew in light of the recent violence in the Middle East, the words could be perceived as threatening and impact the sense of safety of our Jewish and Israeli students. Regardless of intent, graffiti that makes any group of students in our community feel unsafe is unacceptable.
The Day Administrative Team spoke with the student reporters, notified their families to express our pride in their role as upstanders in the community, and have launched an investigation. As we proceed, what is most clear is that our students are still grappling with the unthinkable acts of violence taking place in the Middle East, and trying to make sense of the many facts and messages accessible to them through their families, their peers, the news and social media. Each of our middle schoolers needs to count on the adults in their lives to engage them in conversation about their feelings around the issues involved, and to ensure that they have accurate information and context for everything they are hearing and seeing, so they can be responsible members of their community at this difficult time. As a school community, it is most important that all of our children continue to feel safe, feel seen, feel heard and feel protected from any form of harassment or hate. In partnership with all of you, we will continue the work of creating a school that accomplishes just that.
Please take a moment to talk with your child about the impact of this graffiti on our school community. In the coming week you will learn more details about our first community day on November 7th, where we will engage our faculty and students in a dialogue around identity, bias and microaggressions as part of creating a more inclusive school community and standing together against antisemitism, Islamophobia or any forms of hatred. I feel this event will be a timely opportunity to respond to this incident and help students process the various feelings and concerns they likely have.
This morning, as I began writing this message, I learned of another troubling incident. One of our students posted something threatening in a text thread with fellow classmates over the weekend. We take any threats, no matter the context, very seriously, and as such immediately launched our safety protocol in partnership with the Newton Police. In cases such as these our police partners visit homes, speak to parents, check for threats within the child's environment and work with city and school mental health workers to determine next steps for the child, while keeping the community safe. Due to each individual child's privacy rights, we do not follow up further with the community unless there is a credible threat to the school or to any individual. In this case, we have also notified the families of the students on the text thread, and will continue partnering with the student's family to ensure that the appropriate supports are in place and with the police to ensure that the school continues to be a safe place.
In light of the tragic events in Maine this past week and the ongoing war in the Middle East, both filling our media outlets with images of violence, it is clear that our students continue to struggle and need our ongoing support. At times like these when it seems impossible to solve the complexity of issues facing our students, these incidents serve to remind us how much our children need us, but in a different way than they did when they were younger. They need us to create the space for them to share feelings and ideas, the safety for them to grapple with who they are and how they interact with others, and the trust not to overreact when they are pushing boundaries and challenging expectations. This is what we do well here at Day. We understand the unique world of the adolescent mind, and know how to create opportunities for their growth with a safety net to catch them when they fall, hanging on tight through that very bumpy ride known as middle school.
Please do not hesitate to reach out to me or any members of the administration with any questions about these incidents, how we are working to keep our school a safe space for all, or about how we can partner to best support your child at this time.
SOWN TO GROWN
Sown To Grow is a student SEL and reflection platform that empowers schools to improve student social, emotional, and academic health through an easy and engaging reflection and feedback process.
In a short weekly routine, students check-in emotionally and reflect on the strategies that are working best for them (or new ones to try).
This program has already been successfully piloted in Newton at Bigelow and Brown Middle Schools and is now being implemented at Day and Oak Hill this school year.
At Day advisory teachers will have students take the weekly online check-in during advisory every Tuesday beginning on October 31st.
Please read the information linked below to better understand the impact and reasons for implementing the program at Day.
Timeline for Implementation
Faculty Training- Wed. October 25th
Student Orientation and Pre-Assessment - Tuesday, October 31st
First Check In - Tuesday, November 7th

SPIRIT WEEK
The week of October 30th, we will have a bit of fun as a school community through our first school wide Spirit Week.
Mon. 10/30 - Autumn Day
Tues. 10/31- Dress Up Day
Wed. 11/1- PJ/Comfy Clothes Day
Thurs. 11/2 - Crocs/Crazy Socks Day
Fri. 11/3 - Day Dragon Spirit Day
On Tuesday, October 31st, we will have an optional “dress up” day for students and staff who opt into wearing a costume. This will allow us to align with our school and district values around creating an inclusive environment that honors all beliefs and practices.
Below is the guidance we are sharing with students who choose to dress up on 10/31:
No masks or covering of any part of your face (this is a safety issue)
No weapons or anything that looks like or could be used as a weapon
No offensive or insensitive costume. Someone’s culture is not a costume. We want to make sure that our fun is not at someone else’s expense.
If you have any questions in the interim, please do not hesitate to reach out.

AWAY FOR THE DAY AT DAY PROGRAM UPDATES
The Yondr Pouch Program is entering its third full week and is becoming part of our daily routines. For me it has been a gift to be able to be out front of the school each morning, greeting students as they enter the building.
Below are just a few reminders:
- After your child removes the phone from the pouch at the end of the day, have them close the pouch again. If they leave the pouch open, it may become damaged in their back packs.
- If your child will not bring a device to school, please remember to fill out the "Yondr Pouch Exemption Form" linked below.
