Please remember that if your child is going to be absent from school you should call school before 8.30am to report this. If they are off for multiple days, you should call school each day that they are off. If your child is suffering from something such as a cough or cold we do recommend that you send them into school and see how they get on. It is amazing how many children perk up once they get into school and we can assure you that if it becomes evident that a child should not be in school we will make contact with yourself as parent/carer.
As a school, our attendance has greatly improved over the last year and this is all thanks to you and the effort you are making in getting your children into school every day.
Earth Day 2024
Children across school celebrated Earth Day 2024 on Monday 22nd April. Each class spent time in our Spirituality Garden where they were able to reflect on the importance of caring for our planet. Children listened to stories that shared messages about why it is important to keep our planet clean and safe for years to come. Our Reception children undertook their very own litter pick in the school grounds! Other classes discussed and considered the importance of reducing the amount of pollution we produce. Every child was able to spend some time reflecting on the incredible places, wonderful wildlife and the unique habitats we need to protect.
Weekly Reflection
Our word of the week has been 'bravery' and we've been celebrating St George in worship this week.
Saint George, also known as George of Lydda, is a saint in Christianity and Islam. While very little is known of his life, it’s thought that he was born in Cappadocia, now Turkey, in the 3rd century. It’s also believed that he was a Roman officer of Greek descent who died as a martyr for Christianity.
George has been revered as one of the leading military saints since the Crusades, and his legend is perpetuated by the George and the Dragon story.
He is the patron saint of England, Aragon, Catalonia, Georgia, Lithuania, Palestine, Portugal, Germany, Greece, Moscow, Istanbul, Genoa and Venice (second to Saint Mark).
Facts about Saint George:
- Saint George’s Day has been celebrated annually on 23 April since 1222.
- George is the patron saint of soldiers, archers, cavalry and chivalry, farmers and field workers, riders and saddlers. It’s also believed that he looks after those suffering from leprosy, plague and syphilis.
- Saint George’s flag features a red cross on a white field and was adopted by England in 1190.
- The name George is taken from the Greek ‘georgos’ meaning ‘farmer’ or ‘earth-worker’. Many people pray to Saint George for a good harvest, and his memorial on 23 April occurs as crops are beginning to grow.
- The George and the Dragon story was adapted centuries after his death to immortalise the legend.
