Central Elementary 4th graders compete in new format at Flint Regional Science and Engineering Fair
Central Elementary students in Mrs. Crystal Hoganson's fourth grade CAP (Challenging Academic Potential) classroom participated in the Flint Regional Science and Engineering Fair at the Sloan Museum of Discovery on Thursday, April 11.
While elementary students have been able to participate in the Flint Regional Science Fair in the past, this year's event had a new stand-alone, one-day format. Projects were judged throughout the day and the top projects were awarded during a ceremony held at Longway Planetarium before students returned back to school.
The following day, students set up their projects in the STEM room at Central Elementary so students from other classes could check out their science fair projects.
Award winners are listed below.

Over 30 pieces were selected by art teachers Ryan Kelsey, Shawn Lewis, Bobbie McAllister and Erin Sanderson, and three of our art students took home top prizes and were awarded scholarships to Mott Community College for their artwork:
Jasmyn Witt, 2nd place
Lena Velliquette, Honorable Mention

Just in time for Earth Day! Davison High School is certified as top level Green School
Davison High School was recently certified as an Evergreen Green School (Top-Level) by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) for the 2023-2024 school year (March 2023- February 2024). In order to receive this designation, schools were required to complete a minimum of 20 environmental activities.
Many of the activities were completed by members of the Environmental Club (co-advised by teachers Pamela Ruggiero and Ryan Kelsey) and others were completed by Environmental Science students, Visual Arts students, Construction Trades students, members of DTV News, volunteers from the National Honor Society and members of DECA club. Some of the highlighted activities included:
DTV News created environment focused films for PBS’s NOVA (under the direction of teacher Randy Scott).
Students of the Environmental Club planned a tree planting event called Tree-Plenish in an effort to replace the paper used by students in the last school year.
Students learned about and raised Chinook Salmon for the purpose of releasing them into the Flint River Watershed.
Students maintained a native plant garden that was established in the previous school year.
Painting Students (instructed by teacher Ryan Kelsey) painted murals in the school focused on Michigan flora and fauna.
DECA (lead by teacher Matt Ames) students Ava Bernard and Jasmine Locklear, reinvented and updated the Cardinal Closet (run by teacher Brett Coron) into a sustainable clothing swap location to encourage their peers to wear less fast fashion.
Students from Construction Trades (under the guidance of teacher Zac Schlaud) built large outdoor compost bins and the students and staff of the lunch room helped collect food waste to fill the bins.
Student volunteers from Environmental Club and National Honor Society (under the guidance of teacher Katie Davis) collected paper and plastic bottle and aluminum can recycling from DHS and DAE on a bi-weekly basis.
Environmental Students (taught by teacher Pamela Ruggiero) learned about Michigan watersheds, different forms of alternative energy, and how to live sustainably.
Students of the Environmental Club created an Earth Day Scavenger Hunt (Trash Clean-up). They also promoted spirit (dress up) days to highlight selected environmental concerns.
The Environmental Club selected Environmental themed books from the library to put on display for the month of April (Earth Month).
Pictured below are founding members of The Environmental Club: Julianna Kann, Katie Kraut, Sydney Panduren, Annie Dieterich, Morgan Clark, Kieley James.

"We learned what he does for his job, his favorite color is blue, his favorite animal is a dolphin and he went to Davison when he was in school," said Preschool Teacher Mrs. Angie Rogers. "(The students) had lots of great questions and (Supt. Lobban) learned how many kids love chocolate Easter bunnies!"
DHS/DAE names students of the month for April
Congratulations to the following students named as Students of the Month for Davison High School and Davison Alternative Education.
9th Grade: Ava Tucker
Nominated by: Mrs. Bobbie McAllister
Ava is a great student and a wonderful artist. She works so hard on her drawings and truly goes above and beyond with her craftsmanship and technique. She thinks about making art for a purpose and to reflect her personal style, rather than getting "stuck" on doing the minimum requirements. I have been impressed with Ava's character and kindness toward others, her adaptability and her strong work ethic.
10th Grade: Rebecca Simonsen
Nominated by: Mrs. Tracey Fowler
Rebecca is an absolute delight! She is the type of student who makes the lives of others better. She is kind to everyone - students and teachers alike - and does so because that is just who she is. Becca is highly motivated to succeed. She impressively balances being on the swim team with honors classes and being involved in her community. She seems to always be giving and always doing so with a smile on her face and warmth in her heart.
11th Grade: Lucy Stevens
Nominated by: Mr. Mike Crongeyer
Lucy is the perfect representation of Davison High School. She is hardworking, dedicated and always strives to do her best. Lucy has maintained a GPA of over 4.0 all while taking AP classes and being involved in athletics year round. She was named as the varsity swim team MVP this fall, just recently qualified for the indoor track and field state championships, and is currently ranked #13 in her class which shows Lucy can handle her business both inside and outside of the classroom.
12th Grade: Robert Russell Jr.
Nominated by: Mr. Andrew Michalik
Robert is currently one of two Auto III students. He is also a teacher cadet for automotive. Robert arrives early most every day, loves to help teach lessons and equipment use. He is an amazing person and will go on to do great things. Currently Robert is in our Auto club and Off-Road Club. He helped with the homecoming parade, and he and his dad are both on our automotive advisory boards. Robert is an amazing young man. Between owning his own snow plow/landscaping business and being active on the Davison hockey team, there seems to be nothing he can't handle.
DAE: Adriana Lalonde
Nominated by: Mrs. Shawn Lewis
Adriana takes pride in all the things that she does. She has maintained high academics since she has come to DAE and she shows great appreciation for the program. Adriana is a hard-working student in school and out of school. She is also very creative and meticulous in her artwork. Adriana is mature beyond her years and shows respect for her peers and the staff at DAE.
Athletic News
Athletic Dept. welcomes new varsity pom pon coach
Davison Cardinal Athletics is very excited to welcome back Monica Bryan to the Davison Pom program, this time as head varsity coach of the Pom Pon team.
“I am very excited to be back and coaching at Davison and to have the chance to coach the team that gave me so much love for this sport." Monica said.
Monica was a four-year varsity Pom student athlete at Davison, graduating in 2019. She was a very involved student as well, competing in the Mock Trial competitions, serving on the Yearbook Committee and as a member of the National Honor Society so she understands what it takes to be a successful student athlete.
“We are very excited to get Monica back to Davison as the leader of our girls' pom program," said Athletic Director Dave Beamer. "Her mom, Collette, was a varsity pom coach here at Davison for several years and did a tremendous job with the program. It’s great to have Monica taking over and I know she will be successful in this position as well!”
Monica coached Pom Pon at Birmingham Groves for three years before taking this position at Davison. Hip hop has a special place in her heart as she was part of a competitive hip hop team after high school attending Hip Hop International in Arizona where she took classes and met many people from around the world who share the same passion as her. Monica currently works at the Davison Country Club as she takes classes to complete her cosmetology license in the fall.
Welcome to the Cardinal varsity coaching team, Monica!

Next week's Character Trait: Fairness
Fairness means that you believe that all people have value. You approach situations with an unbiased mindset and treat everyone with respect. Fairness is complex. That’s because it is the product of moral judgment – the process by which people determine what is morally right and what is morally wrong. Moral reasoning has been explored and analyzed in two main traditions: the justice reasoning approach and the care reasoning approach.
Justice reasoning emphasizes the use of reason and logic. In justice reasoning, fairness is determined by objectively weighing what is right or wrong, as determined by a group, society, or universal ethical principles. Care reasoning, by contrast, emphasizes care and compassion. This approach uses concepts like empathy – and understanding and accounting for the needs, interests, and well-being of another person – when making moral decisions.
Although the two approaches are different, most people use a blend of justice and care reasoning when making choices related to fairness.
