WHPE Update February, 2021
"Reach Everyone"
Greetings Everyone,
When I wrote the January SMORE, I mentioned Wisconsin recently had a new covering of snow. As I write the February SMORE, the same thing is happening – it is snowing - at least in the southern part of the state. That is OK. This is Wisconsin, it is winter, we’re supposed to have snow!
By now, most people are moving along in their school year. Many colleges/universities are in their spring semester and elementary and secondary schools have begun their third quarter of the school year. Colleges/universities who have a January Interim period have just finished that term and will be starting the spring semester soon.
As the school year is moving along, WHPE is also moving along. Nominations have closed for the 2021 Awards and for the spring Grants cycle. Nominations are still open for October convention presentation proposals and to serve on the Board of Directors. Our professional development sessions continue and the mini-convention is coming up in March. I hope you will be joining us in the upcoming activities.
Best wishes. Have a safe, healthy, and enjoyable February.
Dan Timm
WHPE President
Reach Everyone
Professional Development
The next ZOOM professional development session will be Wednesday, February 3 at 7:00 when Middle School Division Vice President Tim Mueller presents and hosts a question/answer session on “Survive and Thrive in Your Rookie Years of Teaching PE.” Two weeks later at 7:00 on February 17, Northeast District Coordinator Allisha Blanchette and Health Advisor Mary Wentland will facilitate a presentation and roundtable on “EDI Tips and Activities in Health.” Look for the ZOOM sign-in information coming out soon.
Adolescent Health Symposium
February 18 and 19 are the dates for this year’s Adolescent Health Symposium. Like many other events this year, the symposium will be virtual, but will contain the usual line-up of quality speakers and topics. WHPE Health Advisor Mary Wentland and WHPE member Katie Jadin (Appleton School District) will be two of the presenters. Go to Adolescent Health Symposium University of Wisconsin Oshkosh (uwosh.edu) for registration and symposium information. Registration deadline is February 14

October Convention Presentation Proposals
As we look ahead to our convention in October, we are planning that we will be able to gather in-person and have a “regular” convention. What do you do that you could share with your peers? We are looking for proposals on a multitude of topics in health, physical education, adapted physical education, and the training of teachers. I’m sure you’re doing something that would be of interest to our members. The proposal form, along with other information, is available at http://whpe.us/whpe-annual-convention. The deadline for submissions is March 15.
October Convention Speakers
Agreements have been reached with individuals to be the Keynote Speaker and a Featured Speaker at the October convention. These individuals will be formally announced at a later date.
Board of Directors Nominations
Every year, WHPE holds elections to fill positions on the Executive Committee and Board of Directors. The following positions are up for election this year: President-Elect and Secretary (both on the Executive Committee); and Central, Northeast, Northwest, Southeast, and Southwest District Coordinators. District Coordinators serve on the Board of Directors. All positions except President-Elect are for a two-year term. President-Elect serves for a total of four years – one as President-Elect, two as President, one as Past President. Individuals must have been a WHPE member for two years prior to being elected to the EC or BOD and must remain a member during their time in office. It is recommended persons interested in running for President-Elect have served a two-year term on the Board of Directors as a voting member. Members can self-nominate or nominate a colleague. If nominating a colleague, please be sure that person is interested in serving in an elected position. Deadline for nominations is March 15. The nomination form is available at:

Spring Mini-Convention
WHPE’s mini-convention is next month, Saturday, March 27! The mini-convention will be in the morning with break-out sessions and Mark Friedrich as the featured speaker. There will be no registration fee other than being a WHPE member. More details will be coming soon.
Facebook Daily Postings
Remember that members of the Board of Directors make daily postings each week on Facebook. Check out the posts for teaching tips or opportunities to connect with fellow WHPE members. https://www.facebook.com/wisconsinhealthandpe/
Connecting Content to the Lives of Your Students
One way to connect the content you are teaching to the lives of your students is to share cultural contributions to the activity or topic. February is Black History Month. Share with your students the contributions Black individuals have made to the activity or topic you are teaching. You’ll grab the attention of students in your classes who are Black. If you do not have students who are Black, sharing information about Black contributors is beneficial for all students. To find information to share, do an Internet search for the content being taught and its contributors. After the month of February ends, continue this practice with contributors from other races/ethnicities.
