Secondary Update - 20th September 2024
Dear CEC families
Another successful week has flown by as we wrap up the third week of the term! We’re excited to share some key updates and events with you.
Family Survey – Your Feedback Matters!
This week, we launched our Families Survey, and your input is invaluable as we continue striving for excellence on our journey from ‘Good to Great.’ Please take a few moments to complete the survey: edurio.com/poll/OCGh8M
Weekly Highlights
In-Person Assemblies: As part of our cultural capital programme, we held in-person assemblies with a focus on this week’s theme, fairness. Our "Word of the Week" was fairness, and our Culture Café question was, Does everything in life need to be fair? We encourage you to explore this thought-provoking topic together as a family.
Sparx Maths Success: We’re thrilled to report that over 90% of our students completed their Sparx Maths homework this week! Thank you for supporting your child(ren) in meeting their homework deadlines. Homework is a proven tool for improving both attainment and essential skills like time management and independence. Learn more about its benefits through the EEF Homework Guide.
Workshops on Consent and Healthy Relationships: In response to student feedback, Barnardo’s delivered impactful workshops to our Year 9 and 10 pupils on the important topic of consent and healthy relationships this Wednesday and Thursday.
- Safe and Proud: During yesterday’s planned fire drill, our students exemplified two of our key Campus Values. We’re so proud of how they responded safely and responsibly.

Hello Yellow!
We are excited to share that we will be taking part in World Mental Health Day on 10th October 2024 to raise awareness and show support for young people’s mental health. We apologise for not sharing this on our Key Dates earlier in the year.
On October 10th, we are inviting all pupils from Nursery to Y11 to wear something yellow—whether it's a yellow sock, hairband, wristband, or even a t-shirt! If it has yellow on it, they can wear it, or they can just wear uniform with their yellow tie or PE Top. It's all about coming together to encourage important conversations about mental health. It’s not a competition, but a chance to stand together and remind young people that they are not alone.
By wearing yellow, we’re helping to brighten the day and show our support for mental health awareness. We kindly ask for a £1.00 donation per family, which can be made via MCAS or directly to the charity via this link. All proceeds will go to YoungMinds, a charity dedicated to supporting young people's mental health.
Let’s make the day a little brighter—because together, we shine brighter! 🌟 Thank you for your support!
A Stolen Childhood (Main film)
A Stolen Childhood (Main film) - Watch time:11:24 minutes - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Zhfd0jW7iY
9 in 10 children are given a smartphone by the age of eleven. How is unlimited internet and/or social media access affecting our children’s sense of well-being?
Current research suggests that the messages they receive during these formative years can shape our children’s beliefs about themselves and the world around them – sometimes adversely affecting their mental health.
In this film, we consider the dangers of smartphones and social media on our children’s mental health and what we can do as parents and teachers to help our children navigate the tricky landscape of smartphones, social media and well-being.
What do you need help with?
Nut and Peanut Free School
We have a number of staff and students who have a severe allergic reaction to nuts and peanuts and it is important that we keep them safe. In this regard, we ask that students, staff and visitors do not bring products containing nuts and peanuts into school.
Products that should not be brought into school include:
· Peanuts and nuts and products containing peanuts or nuts
· Peanut butter and peanut based chocolate snacks (snickers / reece’s pieces, Nutella etc)
· Items where peanuts or nuts are listed as main ingredients
· Nut or peanut based oils or products
Products that are allowed:
· Items that “may contain nuts” and “may contain traces of nuts” or “made in factories that use nuts”. These present a low risk and are not direct ingredients in the products
· All other non nut-based snacks and food stuff.
Free School Meals Eligibility
If you wish to check your child’s eligibility for Free School Meals, please use the Devon Citizens Portal This is the quickest and easiest way to apply and will result in you getting an instant decision.

We work closely with our catering provider Dolce to ensure students are provided with healthy and nutritious meals. If you have any comments or feedback you wish to share about the food, we welcome you contacting us by emailing reception@cranbrook.education

Secondary clubs for this term
We are really pleased to share the list of available extra curricular clubs that your child can take part in this term. In addition to the weekly clubs we also run a daily breakfast and after school homework club. The breakfast club is open from 8-8.25 every morning and all pupils are invited to come and fuel up before the day begins. The after school homework club is from 3-4pm and is an opportunity for all pupils to get additional support in completing their homework. CEC Careers
Do you work for a business who is invested in future careers? Do you enjoy speaking with young people and igniting a spark? Is the thought of copious amounts of tea and biscuits a deal breaker? Well look no further! We are really excited to announce that we are hosting our annual careers fair on Wednesday 13th November and this year we want to be bigger than ever. Please share this flyer with any business contacts you may have and email careers@cranbrook.education if you are able to be a part of finding your future workforce.
Anti social behaviour in the community
We have been made aware of a small number of youths, some who attend CEC, causing anti-social behaviour in the community. Firstly, we would like to praise the majority of our pupils and other Cranbrook youths who demonstrate the values of pride and kindness. Please remember, these are the majority.
However, for those who do not demonstrate our values and who are being anti-social and breaking the law, please report them and their actions to the police either by calling 999 or reporting via the Devon and Cornwall Police online 101 service here: https://www.devon-cornwall.police.uk/ro/report/ocr/af/how-to-report-a-crime/
Study Smart
We are working to promote fully funded CACHE courses with certification, available in levels 1, 2 & 3, for school support roles that are funded by the ESFA (Education Skills Funding Agency).
Funding has been made available in your area for our next course for this academic year, which starts on 30th September. As the funding has been awarded by the ESFA there are some eligibility criteria that must be met for a fully funded place, which is listed on our website: www.studysmartuk.online
These courses are designed to make it easy for parents/carers who are looking to gain the necessary qualifications for a school support role, as the classes are run online, within school hours and during term times. Allowing parents to fit the classes in with school drop offs and collections.
Upon enrollment learners are asked to complete two short initial assessments online, in English and Maths to determine which level they should start on. However, the funding allows each learner to progress up to level 3, if they wish to.
We work closely with your local job centre and are able to offer a job interview to those who complete the course.
The deadline to enrol is the end of 25th September!
If you wish to see further information about the courses, please head to: www.studysmartuk.online
