Information for the ORHS Wildcat Nation 02/15/2021 #163
Dear families of Oak Ridge High School students,
District and secondary administrators met to discuss ways to improve our current learning models, and have made the following decisions:
- During the week of February 15 -19, teachers will provide synchronous learning for remote learners.
- This means that when hybrid students are not attending school in person, they will have the option to participate in virtual instruction, following their current schedules remotely.
- This will allow students to practice remote learning should they need to quarantine for possible COVID-19 exposure.
- Beginning Monday, February 22, all students currently in the hybrid model will return to in-person learning on a regular schedule, five days per week.
If you have questions about the expectations moving forward, please reach out to Dr. Garfield Adams, Principal of Oak Ridge High School.
Midweek Academic Intervention Information
Midweek Academic Intervention (MAI) is held every Wednesday from 8:00 a.m. to noon. For now, in order to maintain a safe learning environment, only students who meet certain criteria should attend MAI, and those students are strongly encouraged to attend.
Midweek Academic Intervention
- When: Each Wednesday 8:00 a.m. to noon
- Who: Any student who has an F for Term 2 or currently has an F for Term 3.
- What: Students will enter through the main lobby doors and be assigned a location. There, they will meet with an Academic Coach who will assist them in making a plan of action to improve their grades. Academic Coaches will then help students stay motivated and complete their missing assignments. Students will have until midterm of Term 3 (Friday, February 5) to repair their Term 2 grades. The last day to submit work for Term 3 is Friday, March 5th.
If your child does not meet the current criteria for MAI, please know that individual teachers are available for office hours on Wednesdays, and many teachers hold separate tutoring sessions in person or on Zoom on those days, as well. Please contact your child’s teachers if you would like to request a meeting on a Wednesday.
Breakfast and lunch are available free of charge; however, reservations are required by noon on Tuesday before MAI. If you would like to order breakfast and/or lunch for your child, please follow this link to do so: https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=vdNYGNb6YE61OeUm8KqiP7rCP1M8hxRGrEaMv6jACnJUQlJPTlZURVRBNEY3Sk9JWlE1SDFWU1lMTS4u
If you have questions about MAI, please contact Mrs. Roberts at ahroberts@ortn.edu
ACT TEST FOR JUNIORS and the PRE-ACT for SOPHOMORES are MARCH 2nd
The state sponsored ACT for all juniors is Tuesday, March 2nd. This test is held during the school day in person for all juniors, both face to face and Connect OR. Seniors who have never taken the ACT are eligible to test with the juniors this year. As a reminder, the ACT is a graduation requirement for all students.
All Sophomores (both face to face and Connect OR) will take the PreACT on March 2nd.
Testing will begin at 7:50. Students need to arrive to school by 7:30. Testing locations will be emailed to students and posted throughout the building. Students are automatically signed up for the test, and there is no charge. Students need to bring an ACT approved calculator, several No.2 pencils, and photo ID. All students and staff are required to wear a mask and if a student is ill or is exhibiting symptoms of COVID they should not attend. Students will be dismissed from school after the testing (approx. 12:00) Buses will run at the regular dismissal time (3:06), and lunch will be served as requested.
ACT electronics policy: No cell phones or other electronic devices including Apple watches are allowed in the testing room.
**Freshmen and Seniors will not have classes ( virtual or face to face) on March 2**
** UPDATED 2/16/21** 2021/2022 Course Registration is Happening SOON!!!
The 2021-2022 Oak Ridge High School Academic Planning Guide (APG) is now available on our school’s website under Curriculum in the Academics tab. You may also access it via this link. The guide is also now on student and teacher desktops.
This document contains all you need to know about the new block schedule, graduation requirements, academic policies and procedures, and the course catalog.
There will be a virtual Town Hall meeting to discuss block scheduling in general on Wednesday, February 24th from 6:00 to 7:30 pm. Be on the lookout for more information on how to register coming soon.
Starting this week, teachers are having conversations with students about course offerings and their recommendations for students for next year. Counselors will meet with students during the first two weeks of March to go over how to register for classes, graduation requirements, and course offerings. Students will receive registration forms during these meetings. We will host a Registration Q&A session for parents via Zoom on Thursday, March 11th from 6:00-7:30 pm.
Students will meet with counselors to turn in their registration forms with their course selections during the two weeks following Spring Break. If you have questions about 2021-2022 registration, please contact your student’s school counselor.
ATTN: ConnectOR Parents
This message is for CURRENT ConnectOR parents. This is not for parents wishing to enroll their students in ConnectOR for the first time.
Current ConnectOR parents, please use this form to indicate your plans for the remainder of this school year. To allow the ORHS staff time to make plans for our students returning from ConnectOR, we ask that you make this decision no later than Friday, March 5th.
A few items of note:
- The first day of Term 4 will be Monday, March 29, 2021.
- If you are unsure of your plans, it would be better to indicate your plan is for your child to return to in-person learning in order for ORHS to provide the appropriate classroom seating accommodations.
- If at this time you indicate you want to stay in ConnectOR, please do so with the understanding that the probability of classroom seats available for in-person learning after the deadline will be low. The administration of ORHS will evaluate requests to return to in-person learning after the March 5th deadline on a case-by-case basis and will only allow such a change if there are extenuating circumstances.
- If your child is currently failing a ConnectOR course, we strongly recommend he/she return to in-person learning if at all possible.
Congratulations to these National Merit Finalists!!
Oak Ridge High School is excited to announce that four of our students are National Merit Semifinalists this year! We are very proud of these academically talented seniors. They now have the opportunity to continue in the National Merit Scholarship competition for some 7,600 scholarships worth more than $31 million. Over 1.5 million students entered the competition. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest scoring entrants in each state. Seniors - Time to Start Earning your Work Ethic Distinction
Students graduating with a district-developed work ethic distinction will be recognized upon graduation. This distinction will be useful for presentation to future employers for work-based learning, apprenticeships, and employment in a chosen field after graduation. Employers throughout Tennessee have indicated that students who present a document such as this, indicating desirable work habits, will be given preference for interviews. In order to earn such a distinction, students must exhibit certain characteristics by earning points on a Work Ethic The application form is available in the school counseling office or via this link: www.ortn.edu/Curriculum/CCTE/Work_Ethic.pdf
Students who attain at least 20 points on this form may deliver it at any time before April 1st, 2020 to Dr. Holly Cross at Oak Ridge High School, room CS244.
For the TN Promise standard, for practicality, there is a statewide COVID-19 exception to the expectation to earn the volunteer hours before earning the Work Ethic Distinction this year.
Most areas selected on the form can be verified in-house by Dr. Cross, once submitted. For those items that cannot be found in Skyward, students must present written verification of items selected. A signed certificate of completion will be provided by Dr. Cross for students to present to potential employers, once earned.
