As February ends, we are approaching the end of the trimester, an important time for students to reflect on their progress and finish strong. We encourage students to stay focused, complete any outstanding quizzes or tests, and take advantage of available resources for support. This is also a great time to check grades, connect with teachers, and set goals for the remainder of the school year.

Once again, we are honoring and highlighting each and every senior from the graduating class of 2025. Each school day, two seniors will be highlighted on the Swan Valley School Districts FB page and on our Live Feed on the website. The first senior is highlighted at 7:00 am and the second senior is highlighted at 11:00 am. Seniors are picked at random. Be sure to get your senior picture submitted to your yearbook class if you haven’t turned it in already. I hope you enjoy being celebrated!

Swan Valley is full of future good leaders. Leadership is something that is learned over time. Life experiences, education, and passion are needed for good leaders. We need someone to lead that has been through the challenges and grind before. Their decisions need to be well calculated and thought out. Leaders are passionate about the group goals and cares for the entire group accomplishing their goals.

Bad leaders are in it for their own goals and their own validation. Rarely will they take credit when the group fails and toss blame onto others. Bad leaders are the first to tell you that “they are a big deal” or often remind you “I am the boss and you work for me”. However, there is some good that comes out of bad leadership. It teaches those how not to be a leader. That listening and compromise are more important than speaking over someone, and taking others for granted.

Our students, especially seniors, are venturing out into the real world getting this valuable information. Soon, they will go from good to great leaders in our community.

This Fall, we had the opportunity to bring a truly inspirational program to the students and community here at Swan Valley. Headed by award-winning educator and speaker, Joe Vercellino and his dynamic team of performing Artists – The Lion Heart Experience brought us a message of self-worth, the value of community, mental health and how the words we speak to ourselves and to others matter.

We are bringing The Lionheart crew back to Swan Valley on March 10th for another message of hope, inspiration and connection. This time, we have the unique honor of including our very own Havens Elementary Choir to the performance. These students will get the chance to sing with the Lionheart Experience during the morning performances for our Elementary schools and will be featured during the Free Community Concert that evening!

Already this season, we are seeing an increase in pneumonia cases.

Pneumonia is a respiratory infection in which the air sacs in the lungs become inflamed and filled with fluid or pus, making it difficult and painful to breathe. It can be caused by a bacteria, virus, or fungus. Pneumonia is often the consequence of a COVID or influenza infection. It is spread through respiratory droplets in the air or from touching contaminated services and then touching our faces (nose, mouth, eyes), similar to the way other respiratory infections are spread. Symptoms include fever, dry cough, headaches, body aches and weakness. However, instead of feeling better within a few days, symptoms worsen and may include chest pain, shortness of breath, a rapid heart rate, shaking/chills and/or a blueish tint to the lips and nailbeds. Pneumonia can be diagnosed per chest xray, sputum sample or blood cultures. Treatment includes antibiotics (for pneumonia caused by bacteria), bronchodilators (to help ease breathing), fluids and LOTS OF REST!! A person with pneumonia may remain contagious for up to 48 hours after starting an antibiotic and fever has stopped, and it may take from one week to one month before full recovery. Untreated pneumonia can lead to a lung abscess, sepsis and ultimately respiratory failure. Some of the infections that can lead to pneumonia can be prevented with vaccines. These include the flu vaccine, the pneumococcal vaccines, and the COVID vaccine. Meticulous hand washing, cough etiquette and immunizations are the best public health measures we can take to keep ourselves and those around us healthy this season!

Swan Valley High School Boys Volleyball

Swan Valley High School Boys Volleyball has been approved by the Swan Valley Board of Education as a school athletic club! The team will start practices on Monday, March 10th on the same day as the other high school spring sports.

Students and parents interested are encouraged to attend an informational meeting on Thursday, March 6th at 6:00 p.m. in the high school library. At this meeting, coaches will be introduced and a practice / competition schedule will be shared. There will also be an opportunity to ask questions.

Swan Valley High School Open Weight Room Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Covenant HealthCare Volunteer Services is now accepting applications for the Summer 2025 session of our High School Volunteer Program. Students may apply online, www.covenanthealthcare.com/volunteer. Application deadline is March 31, 2025. Students will have an opportunity to experience a medical center atmosphere and interact with nurses, physicians, and technologists throughout the organization. Students will be able to volunteer in a wide variety of areas including clinical and non-clinical settings. This program would be an opportunity to meet requirements for volunteer service for high school and college and we offer this program every summer.

Students need to be 16 years of age by September 1 of this year with a 3.0 grade point or higher. Volunteers complete 40 hours of service over 10 weeks, June through August of this year. More details about the program will be available after the student applies.

READ Association Volunteers

The READ Association of Saginaw County is currently working on plans for a Summer Mentor Program. Our regular Mentor Program takes place during the school year, mostly during the school day. Trained volunteers meet with elementary students in need of extra reading practice. In order to reach more students, the READ Association would like to continue this during the summer and the Thomas Township Library has agreed to be a host. This program would be a good match for Swan Valley students. The meetings would be one hour per week.

Saginaw County Animal Care & Control

Volunteers assist staff in three areas, dog walking, cat care and housekeeping. Our volunteers are a vital part of the organization! Every bit of time a volunteer gives is a true gift to the staff and animals. For more information please see the attached flyer

Saginaw County

You would volunteer with a small group (bring a friend) along with Mrs. Palmer or Ms. McLeod, or Ms. Aldrich (all Swan Valley High School graduates) during this summer at the Friday Night Live event in Downtown Saginaw. Starting around 5:00/5:30 -- 9:00/9:30 pm every Friday night starting July 11th to August 15th.

We take care of the trash, recycle, and cans for the entire event.
