A quick message from Mr. Peterson, our math specialist!...
You ask your child to read over the summer…have them practice math skills, too!
If a student doesn’t practice his or her math skills during the summer, it has an impact on math achievement. Researchers have found that the lack of math skill practice over the long summer months results in an average loss of 2.6 months of study when measured from year to year.
The teachers at Mint Valley challenge students to continue to practice math skills over the summer. For example, if your child spends just 10 minutes a day, he/she will have completed over 12 hours of math by the time school resumes in September. Practice can include:
- Playing basic fact games online, or even better, games with cards face to face, to keep fluent with math facts
- Incorporate real-life use of math such as helping to plan parts of a family vacation or estimating costs of back-to-school supplies and clothes
- Anytime you use estimation in your day to day activities, ,try and include your child as much as possible
- Building Number Sense and estimation skills in real life situations goes a long way when students return to the classroom.
- In addition, anytime you see arrays (i.e. 3 rows of 12 cookies would be 36 cookies) point those out to your child. Even more, if 2 cookies are eaten, what would be the new equation? 3 x 12 – 2 or 2 x 12 +10.
Bringing these daily math observations more to the forefront and making them more visible to your child goes a long way in developing and retaining mathematical fluency.

APPLY NOW FOR FREE PRE-K PROGRAM
Longview Public Schools is accepting applications for its Kinder Bridge program—a free, full-day pre-kindergarten for four-year-old’s. With only 128 openings available for the 2025–26 school year, the district is urging families to apply as soon as possible.
Kinder Bridge is for children who will turn four years old by August 31, 2025, and is especially valuable for families who may have faced barriers—such as high costs. Families who submit an application will be invited to attend a conference and student screening at one of Longview’s schools.
Kinder Bridge not only prepares students for kindergarten—it also provides a supportive transition for families new to the school system. Families interested in applying can do so now at longviewschools.com/kinderbridge, by visiting our school or they can contact the district office at 360-575-7000.
