Community Update - Mid Summer
August 4, 2023
Hello North Rockland Families:
I hope you have been enjoying the summer. While it’s still prime time for warm weather activities and not yet time to start focusing on returning to school, the first week of August provides a good opportunity to check in.
The next month of summer has a habit of coming and going fast. So let this Mid-Summer Update both serve as a reminder to enjoy each and every moment and help put your mind at ease as to what you need to know to get your child ready for school.
In the 2023-24 school year North Rockland will continue its tradition of excellence while consistently launching new programs or opportunities to enhance teaching and learning at every grade level.
Some of these new offerings will include: Additional career ready/real world experiences with institutions like Cornell Cooperative or Westchester Medical, expanding the NR School-to-Work program - where students have the opportunity to work and be paid in areas that interest them like technology or instruction - extending our gaming team and athletic rosters by adding girls modified field hockey and flag football as well as additional unified teams, launching the North Rockland Behavior Center and implementing the Dual Language program district wide.
North Rockland has worked to keep school meals free for all families once again in 2023-24 while also partnering with a consultant to help us make positive changes to our school breakfast and lunch. The fresh upgrades launching this September include: Increased choice, expanded healthy options, addition of a Boar’s Head panini station, a pizza/stromboli station and daily hot breakfast. A district meal team is currently being put in place as we look to make our food offerings some of the best in the Hudson Valley!
This summer has been productive for NR. During the first month of the district's Summer Enrichment Programs, students have had access to academic programming, camp experiences and extended school year learning over the course of the day, including field trips, arts activities and outdoor recreation.
Our staff has also been very active. The Facilities and Buildings and Grounds teams have been doing an incredible job working on and overseeing all of our Capital Improvement Projects to North Rockland High School's athletics fields, phys. ed spaces and buildings, the NR Behavior Center, the Special Education Accessible Playground, the Tomkins Cove Solar Farm and Willow Grove’s new roofing installation.
Instructional staff have been diligently preparing and planning for the upcoming school year. Spending the summer attending a number of Integrative Mental Health, Social Emotional, Technology and Professional Development Workshops, participating in team planning and strategically reshaping curriculum has led to the creation of programs that are all structured to be learner-active, technology-infused and provide students with access to an exceptionally optimized, high level academic experience.
As we begin the second half of the summer, if you have not already, I encourage our students and families to check out the many events and opportunities our area has to offer. Town and village summer concerts, recreation programs, local parks and playgrounds and outdoor community festivals are just a few of the local highlights to look forward to this time of year. Under the Community Opportunities section of the update there will always be information on events like the linked flier about the Abilities Night Game at Boulders Stadium.
Our goal is for the Community Updates to continue to be a user friendly resource for ongoing information throughout the 2023-24 school year to ensure parents stay in the know. The strong partnership between our school community, families and district is essential to the success of students.
We will soon gather in September for the first day of the 2023-2024 school year. We will all be ready to greet your children and provide them with a seamless transition into new grades, together - as a team. Until then, please accept my best wishes to you and yours for a safe, healthy and happy summer!
2023 - 24 School Year Information! 🍎
Programming
NRCSD x Cornell Cooperative Youth Investigators Program
Real-world experiences are crucial for students, especially at the secondary level. Giving high schoolers a chance to test their abilities before leaving school is optimum. That's why NR has partnered with institutions like Cornell Cooperative for youth development. We believe the best way to gauge what career path you want to take is by trying it. Therefore more programs, internships, school-to-work opportunities are being established for 2023-24 NR Strong!
Dual Language Program Expansion
The NR Dual Language Program’s enrichment will now be available in kindergartens in all our lower elementary schools as well as to first graders in West Haverstraw Elementary school. The class provides our students grades K-6 the opportunity to learn academic content (Math, Science, Social Studies and English) while also learning to speak, read and write at a high academic level in Spanish. Students follow the same curriculum as their peers in the English instruction classroom with equal time spent learning both languages. Enrolling kids in language school can cost upwards of $40,000. Through this important integrated model our learners are receiving an advanced educational experience for a fraction of the cost expertly implemented by skilled, experienced staff and Exec Director of K-6 Curriculum & ELL Services Miguelina Lopez. Our goal is to give as many students as possible the option to participate in the program and become bilingual, bicultural and thriving in terms of their academics.
School Supplies
NRCSD has the 2023-24 School Supplies covered! 📚🖇✏️🖍
North Rockland Central School District once again will provide back-to-school supplies for all students! This is now the fourth year of being able to do that.
NR is blessed with involved, committed school/home partnerships. We are grateful that our district and community continue to work together to equip students with the basic supplies necessary for success and excellence.
The materials will be distributed when school begins in September. Individual teachers may require a few course-specific items once classes begin.

School Meals
School Breakfast/Lunch Remain Free in NR 🥪
In North Rockland we are proud to share that all our schools qualify for free breakfast and lunch. Our dedicated Food Service Department has worked to get all our schools eligible for the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) for the next three years.
***Each child is entitled to receive one free breakfast and one free lunch meal per day. For additional meals students are encouraged to use My School Bucks.
Food Service Overhaul and Revamp
North Rockland brought in a consultant to help us make positive changes to our school meal offerings including: increased choice, expanded healthy options, addition of a Boar's Head panini station, a pizza stromboli/station and daily hot breakfast. A district meal team is being put in place as we look to make our food offerings some of the best in the Hudson Valley!
Capital Improvements
Sneak Peaks of Sumer Work
This summer the district has been very busy working on some monumental Capital Improvement Projects.
North Rockland Behavior Center
The new North Rockland Behavior Center is gleaming before classrooms begin being set up for the start of school. We are so grateful to be unveiling a place that provides the opportunity to build a comprehensive program for students and families struggling with mental health challenges brought on by post pandemic traumas and crises impacting our school communities.
The center's construction and future launch was made possible for North Rockland with $2.25 million in grant funding, per year, for the program over the next five years. That includes $500,000 annually from a state Department of Mental Health grant and $1.75 million a year through a federal Department of Education grant.
Special thanks goes out to our Building and Grounds, Custodial staff and Business office for making this new resource available to the NR school community!
North Rockland High School Sports Complex
Let there be light!
Friday night lights have officially been installed surrounding the new sports complex featuring an eight lane track, turf field, press box and stadium at North Rockland High School. The structures are already beaming in the summer sun, a shining indicator of what’s to come. Stay tuned, we will be sharing more progress!
North Rockland’s Special Education Accessible Playground is nearing completion!
The new, inclusive, barrier-free and boundless playground at Willow Grove Elementary meets not only ADA regulations, it ensures that children of all abilities have access to and can use the fun, state of the art equipment. Our special services team plans to help enrich kids' play, engage senses, develop problem-solving skills and build confidence in the welcoming space daily. It's been all smiles from our team as this capital improvement project has been progressing throughout the summer. #NRStrong school community endeavours like this are beyond rewarding to create #NRTogether.
Tomkins Cove Solar Farm
North Rockland Central School District administrators, Board of Education members and contractors gathered to witness “activation” of the new Tomkins Cove Solar Farm, located on the grounds of the former Tomkins Cove Elementary School. Activating the facility is one of the final steps before NRCSD takes full ownership of the 21st century solar array. The solar panels will generate 2.3 megawatts – more than half of the annual energy consumption of the district. This project is part of a larger energy savings initiative which has already allowed NRCSD to win a Green Award from the Rockland Business Association. As part of an Energy Performance Contract - at no cost to taxpayers - the projects are fully funded by the energy savings. As a district, we are proud to move towards sustainable energy that will ensure long term financial savings and help decrease environmental impact.
District 96 Assemblyman Kenneth Zebrowski spoke to North Rockland’s Humanities Program
The two week intensive course for grade nine English and Social Studies honors students has been tasked with exploring the roles government and citizen involvement can play in our communities. In preparation for the assemblyman’s visit, learners researched the New York State Assembly and Senate then prepped pages of questions for Zebrowski.
“What made you want to go into politics at 26?” “What classes would you suggest taking in high school if you are interested in law?” “What’s the bill you are most proud of passing?” “How can I help make a park in my neighborhood?” "How can I participate?" “Where do I start?...”
Interested scholars had so many questions for the assemblymen, he actually stayed well past his scheduled time to not only answer them all but converse about shared goals. Ken was the author of the full-day kindergarten funding bill that achieved full-day kindergarten for North Rockland and put a full-day kindergarten program in reach for the entire state. A now successful local initiative that had started off as an advocacy call from parents. Read full story.
