The Leader in Me
In 5th Grade, we believe that all students are leaders. Through the 7 Habits, we are working unleash the potential of greatness in each and every student. This quarter we focused on Habit 5: Seek first to understand then to be understood and Habit 6: Synergize.
During our Habit 5 Lesson, we talked to students about making sure you are really trying to understand the other persons perspective and point of view. We watched a short video clip showing how to be an active listener, then we had students practice basic listening skills. One partner created a figure using Legos, K'Nex, etc, and then they had to explain to their partner how to duplicate it (without there partner being able to see it). Then students had a chance to think a little deeper about a time that would have worked out differently if they would have used Habit 5, OR a time they did use Habit 5.
During our Habit 6 lesson students worked with their class to complete a challenge. Each class, or team, lined up and held hands. We started a hula hoop at one end of the line, and without breaking the chain, the students had to move the hula hoop all the way down the line of students. It was so much fun for the kids...and for us to watch.
You also have been receiving your child's leadership binder. A couple of things to note in their binder is that they have included their goals and their graded tests. Students are excited to see how they have improved on their tests after Tiger Time!

We will continue to add to the list of technology we use in the classroom as we learn new programs. Let me know if you have questions.
X-tra Math- This is one of the best places to practice math addition, subtraction, multiplication tables, and division tables.
Epic- Is a fun place for kids to pick a book and read.
Front Row- Practice in reading, writing, and math that is set up like a game.
SeeSaw - A great tool to share what is happening in the class from the perspective of your child!BrainPOP - Has great videos, quizzes, movie making and a lot of useful information.

Each of these programs gives us feedback and information about your child's strengths and weaknesses and students enjoy practicing this way. You can also check into the program to see how your child is doing or to see how often they are practicing.
