SEPTEMBER 4, 2024 - NEWSLETTER
SLPHS families,
We launched the school year today with all students. The building was buzzing with the energy that comes with the start of a new school year. Staff were eagerly greeting students and students were, in MY mind, also excited to meet and reconnect with their teachers and peers.
As we welcomed students, we reviewed our approach to cell phones, ear buds and other personal electronics and will continue to reinforce our approach throughout the week. Like districts across Minnesota, we anticipate positive impacts on student engagement and learning, as well as benefits to mental health and overall wellness.
As a reminder, students may engage with their cell phones and ear buds during passing time and lunch time. The use of personal electronics during instructional time and instructional spaces is not allowed. Again, we look forward to positive outcomes from reducing persistent cell phone use and social media consumption.
Join us for our Fall Curriculum Night - Tuesday, September 10, 5-7 p.m.
I encourage all families to come, meet teachers and learn more about the curriculum your student will engage with and the learning experiences our teachers have planned for them. While you can access much of this information in Schoology, this event is designed to be more conversational and give you a greater understanding of the course content and experiences. There will also be a senior parent meeting in the Fine Arts Center at 6 p.m. where families can learn more about the following topics:
- Career exploration, employment and military opportunities after high school
- College application process
- Financial Aid
- Direct Admissions program through the Minnesota Department of Education
- Senior counselor meetings
- Upcoming events for the Class of 2025
Student Parking Permits
We have seen a significant increase in the number of student drivers in the past couple of years. Last year, we had more student drivers than parking spots in the student lot and overflow lot. We will monitor the sale of parking permits this year to ensure we do not oversell permits beyond what the designated parking accommodates.
As a result, in September, we will sell parking permits to 11th grade and 12th grade student drivers. Student drivers in 10th grade will be placed on a waitlist. We will open up sales of parking permits once we determine the student parking demand within our junior and senior classes. By the start of October, we will open sales of permits to 10th graders on the waitlist and in order of request following that. If we are consistent with last year’s volume of student drivers, we will most likely sell out of parking permits at some point this school year.
Finally, as we start the school year, I want to reinforce the importance of student daily attendance and its impact on student performance. Our school day begins at 8:10 a.m. and concludes at 2:55 p.m. Please continue to reinforce this with your student as we build habits to carry us through the year.
Thank you as always for your ongoing partnership. Today was a great first day and we are looking forward to 164 more this school year.
One school, one community, #SLPPantherProud!

Attendance Matters!
Regular attendance is key to student success. Missing just two days a month can negatively affect progress, especially in reading and long-term goals like high school graduation. We know there are times a student will need to be absent. Our goal is to work with parents and guardians to help their children have consistent – and on-time –attendance. Let’s work together to keep our students learning!
Is your student under the weather? Visit the Attendance & Absences page to find helpful tips of when to keep them home and when to send them to school. This page also has resources if you or your student need additional help.
Need to report an absence?

Safety and security update: 2024-2025
Spring Lake Park Schools is committed to maintaining a safe and secure environment for all students and staff. We have a comprehensive safety plan that includes a layered approach with prevention, protection, and emergency response measures. Along with neighboring districts and local law enforcement, we have adopted the “I Love You Guys” Foundation Standard Response Protocol (SRP) for responding to incidents.
Throughout the school year, each building will complete 11 required safety drills. The drills cover a variety of scenarios including evacuation, shelter and lockdown.
All drills conducted with students are scheduled and pre-announced to students and staff. For lockdown drills specifically, parents will be notified at least 24 hours in advance of the drill and may choose to have their student not participate. To opt your student out of a lockdown drill, notify the school’s main office by the start of the day the drill is scheduled to allow time for accommodations to be made.
Learn more about our approach to Safety and Security at SLP including the Standard Response Protocol.
Spring Lake Park High School's first lockdown is scheduled for Friday, September 13 at 10:09 a.m.
No DoorDash, outside food deliveries, during the school day
As a reminder, no DoorDash or outside food deliveries are allowed at SLPHS. Any deliveries at the high school made during the school day will be held in the office until the end of the day. The increase in outside food deliveries creates additional work for our very hard-working office staff, negatively impacts our physical environment, and too often puts our safety and security protocols at risk.
All guests and students must enter through the main office during the school day, where they can be verified and granted access to our building. Deliveries made to locked doors during the school day are not permitted and violations of this protocol will have consequences. Thank you for helping reinforce this with your student. We appreciate your support in helping us create a clean, welcoming and safe environment.

First day photos: Smiles, fist bumps, possibilities
A new year has begun for students at Spring Lake Park Schools, and we’re loving all the first day vibes. The first day photo album captures all the energy, excitement – and yes, nerves – of the first day of school. There were plenty of smiles, fist bumps and hugs as students began a new year with endless possibilities ahead.
These first days of school are focused on creating a strong Panther community. There’s a lot of time spent getting to know each other, building relationships and learning important routines. Strong foundations set the tone for the year ahead. Check out the story and first day photo album.

Live on 65 - After Hours Big Band on Oct. 2
Back by popular demand, After Hours Big Band is returning to the Fine Arts Center Stage on Wednesday, October 2 at 7 p.m. This ain’t your grand-pappy’s jazz band and it’s not a run-of-the-mill concert series either - the band brings with them Reed Grimm (of American Idol and Shoeless Revolution) and a collection of familiar songs from Disney to The Beatles and beyond.
Once called the "Best Big Band in the entire Twin Cities" by bassist's mother, the band will blaze through a performance that will have you clapping along, laughing, and moving to the beat. It’s a perfect way to kick off the Live on 65 season and not a performance to be missed. Grab your tickets today.
