New Student Area in the Pool Quad
Construction crews finished the concrete on the new Pool Quad area last week. Were looking forward to opening up the space for student use next semester!
End of 1st Semester
The last day of school for students this semester is Thursday, December 19th. Finals will be held Tuesday, December 17 through Thursday, December 19th on a modified block schedule. Second semester starts on Monday, January 6th; we will be on a collaboration bell schedule.
In order to minimize class disruptions during finals, we will not be delivering passes to classes/students. In the event that your student needs to be released from school early, please have them bring their excuse note to the attendance office prior to the start of class.
Attendance Updates: Please Read
Early Release Requests
Our attendance office is getting overwhelmed with last minute early release requests. Please call 619-593-5331 at least 2 hours before your student needs to leave or send a note to be dropped off before school begins. This will ensure your student receives their early release note in a timely manner. All Day Absences
For all day absences, you can email vhs-attendance@guhsd.net or continue to leave a message at 619-593-5333. Please include your student's name, ID number, date of absence and reason for absence. Absences must be cleared within 72 hours or students will be marked truant.

Teenagers and Sleep
The American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends that high school students (ages 13–18) get 8–10 hours of sleep per night. However, most teens get less than that.
Sleep deprivation can have negative effects on a teenager's life, including:Mental health: Sleep deprivation can lead to mental health struggles.
Academic performance: Not getting enough sleep can lead to worse grades.
Risky behaviors: Sleep deprivation can make teens more likely to engage in risky behaviors, such as smoking or drinking.
Parents can help their teens get enough sleep by:
Modeling good sleep habits, such as going to bed at a regular time and cutting back on caffeine in the evening
Encouraging regular exercise
Removing snacks and screens/phones two hours before bedtime.
Here's an article with more information about Teens & Sleep from Johns Hopkins Medicine.

Schedule Changes Second Semester
There is always some movement with classes at the start of second semester due to new enrollments, level changes, checkouts, etc. While we expect movement will be minimal, we ask that all students check their schedules in Infinite Campus the first weekend in January for any updates.
