A Message from Superintendent Joe Koch
May is now upon us and I cannot believe how fast this school year has gone. As we prepare for the summer and for next school year I would like to acknowledge the hard work of Mr. Shawn Waller, Mrs. Colleen Hoyne, and Mrs. Andrea Kaplan and thank them for their years of service to our community. We wish them all the best as they transition into their new roles in new school districts. For the parents and staff at Big Bend, Clarendon Avenue, and Eagleville Elementary Schools, we are actively engaged in the recruitment and selection process for our next leaders. Our process will include input from staff and families and will involve teachers and parents in the interview process. Please watch for more information about this coming soon.
Also, Wednesday was National School Principals Day and next week is Teacher Appreciation Week. Please join me in taking a moment to thank our school administrators, teachers, and all of our staff for the incredible job they do with our students and families. They are the backbone of our district and we are grateful for their outstanding efforts!
Finally, as the referendum did not return the results we had hoped for, we are reviewing our plans and the feedback we had on the project. We are planning a presentation for the May 13 Board Committee of the Whole Meeting. Please tune via our livestream if you are able!
MASD Hosts Screenagers: Under the Influence May 13
MASD will host a special screening of Screenagers Under The Influence: Addressing Vaping, Drugs, and Alcohol in the Digital Age, the third feature documentary in the Screenagers trilogy on May 13. The movie delves into how the tech revolution has reshaped adolescence and its effects on substance use. The film debunks myths and depicts strategies parents and schools can use to encourage healthy decision-making, support teen mental health, set limits, and create healthy home environments. The film also includes many ways young people are using their wisdom and strength to help each other and themselves through this complicated terrain around substance use.
The screening will take place Monday, May 13, at 6 p.m. at Brooklife Church. The event is free and open to the public. Free childcare is available. Click here to learn more and to register today!

May is Mental Health Awareness Month
For Mental Health Awareness Month, we have an opportunity to break the stigma around mental health in our campus by talking openly, compassionately, and kindly to each other. No one should ever struggle alone.
School staff are the backbone of student well-being, but remember that you also can’t pour from an empty cup.
During Mental Health Awareness Month, NAMI joins the mental health community to reaffirm our commitment to building our understanding of mental illness, increasing access to treatment and ensuring those who are struggling know they are not alone.
