FOOD SERVICE PARTNERSHIP
Did you know...?
Wayland Union Schools contracts with Chartwells to direct Food Service operations throughout the district.
In addition to the buying-power that keeps food costs low, Chartwells also provides menus, recipes, fun activities, FREE samples, and staff training for the district. This allows student meals to be fresh, nutritious, and affordable while implementing socially responsible and sustainable food best practices.
STUDENTS LEARN BEST WHEN THEY GET INVOLVED!
Discovery Kitchen is a Chartwells program that brings FREE interactive food and nutrition experiences directly to students. With a Traveling Pop-Up Kitchen, trained chefs are able to lead cooking demonstrations and offer FREE samples to encourage students of all ages to try new, healthy food options. The Smoothie Bike is part of the Discovery Kitchen and is everyone's FAVORITE way to engage students with healthy food experiences! Students always LOVE a ride on the bike to blend the smoothies and trying a delicious smoothie after lunch!
Global Eats is another Chartwells program offered throughout the year to students at the High School. Menu items are selected from around the world to encourage students to expand their food comfort-zone and learn about countries and cultures different from their own. Global Eats options are generally offered once per week and include FREE entrees from destinations such as China, India, Italy, Mexico, Korea, and the Caribbean!
Scott Larson, Director of Dining Services for Wayland Union Schools, has been with Chartwells for 15 years. "Chartwells provides expertise and support that many school districts wouldn't otherwise have access to and because we're such a large company, we have buying power that helps keep costs low. It's a win-win," said Larson.
FOOD ALLERGIES
Does your student have a food allergy? Special Diet Statement forms are available for students needing food substitutions due to food allergies or disabilities. These forms must be completed by a physician's office and submitted to the school once per year. The form lists what foods to omit and appropriate substitutions (if any).
The Special Diet Statement form can be found on the WUS Food Service Website.
Additionally, the Nutrislice lunch menu program used by WUS allows parents to filter out breakfast and lunch menu items based on allergens. When viewing a school's menu, the "Filters" option in the upper right corner of the menu allows parents to filter out allergens such as peanuts, milk, soy, etc. Menu items will appear crossed-out and red if they contain a selected allergen to avoid.
If you have questions about using menu filters, please contact our office. We're happy to help!
