Black History Month
Black History Month is celebrated in February to recognize the contributions of Black people to American history and culture.
Black history facts
- In 1619, the first African slaves arrived in Virginia.
- In 1849, Harriet Tubman escaped from slavery and became a leader of the Underground Railroad.
- In 1863, President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which declared that all slaves in the Confederate states were free.
- In 1870, the Fifteenth Amendment to the Constitution gave Black people the right to vote.
- In 1987, Mae Jemison became the first Black woman to be accepted into NASA's astronaut training program.
- In 1960, Ruby Bridges became the first Black child to integrate an all-white elementary school in the South.
Celebrating Black history
- Visit a museum during Black History Month to learn about Black culture.
- Explore Black history at the public library.
- Encourage your child to learn more about the impact of African Americans on their chosen field.
Black History Month became a monthlong celebration in 1976. Scholar Carter G. Woodson's dedication to celebrating Black people's contributions led to the establishment of Black History Month.

Crosswalk Safety
In order to continue keeping our Oakwood students, staff, and families safe before school at drop off and after school at dismissal, we are asking our community to follow all California laws pertaining to our crosswalk. Please see before for reminders.
California law requires drivers to yield to pedestrians at all crosswalks, including those near schools. Drivers should be especially careful in school zones, where children may not be aware of traffic.
Laws for school crosswalks
- California Vehicle Code (CVC) 21950: Requires drivers to yield to pedestrians at all crosswalks, including those near schools
- CVC 21368: Covers marked pedestrian crosswalks near school buildings
- Daylighting law: Prohibits parking within 20 ft of any marked or unmarked crosswalk
Other safety tips for school crosswalks:
- Drivers should be prepared for sudden stops and avoid distractions
- Drivers should slow down and yield to pedestrians at crosswalks
- Drivers should look for pedestrians and be prepared to stop, whether or not the crosswalk has flashing lights
