KEWASKUM DISTRICT NEWS
MESSAGE FROM THE DISTRICT ADMINISTRATOR
Recently, I’ve been listening to podcasts and reading articles about the impact of technology and social media on young people. I’m sure many of you are seeing what the research has confirmed; the world that our children are living in is much different than what many of us have experienced. The impacts vary greatly from tween Instragram Influencers being stalked by men to the increased likelihood of children developing myopia (nearsightedness) from being indoors and in front of screens too often. Just this past week, there was an article about how a Kenosha teacher groomed a middle school student into an inappropriate relationship using Snapchat to communicate.
May is a great time to reboot our habits. With school ending in a few weeks, you can take some time with your children to determine what would be good boundaries for technology and social media use to keep a healthy lifestyle. Here are some ideas that might help with the discussion:
Think of a schedule for technology use: I remember talking with a parent whose child was falling asleep in class. We found out her daughter was on her phone all night and only got a few hours of sleep. The family decided that there was a location where everyone put their phones when they went to bed, so that they were not tempted to stay up late on their phones.
Talk about technology-free zones: I’ve talked to many families that use the dinner table as a time that phones were not permitted. My wife and I have an agreement that when we are on our walks together, we stay off our phones.
Set time/app limits: Many phones allow parents to set an amount of time they can be on their phones or the internet. Most phones also allow parents to limit which apps are available to their children.
Monitor activity: Smartphones allow children to communicate with others very easily. Many apps have functions so that parents can monitor their children’s social media and communication activity to make sure it is safe and appropriate.
Spend time outdoors: Taking something away isn’t always very motivating, so think of some fun activities that you can do outdoors that would replace the normal time that is spent on technology.
Model the behavior you’d like to see: Children are great at watching us, for good and bad. If they see positive use of technology, then they will start to mimic it.
It may feel like an uphill battle. Phones and apps are designed to capture our and our children’s attention. But I believe that by being intentional and having some good measures in place, we can help our children understand how to use technology and social media appropriately.

SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICERS
One of the important components to creating safe and secure learning environments in our district is having a strong relationship with our local law enforcement agencies. One part of that relationship is our School Resource Officer (SRO). Our SRO is a sworn law enforcement officer who is employed by the Kewaskum Police Department, and we contract with them so that we can have an officer on school grounds to ensure safety, foster positive relationships, and act as a resource for our students and staff. SROs are also critical in times of crisis, whether it be a natural disaster, act of violence, or a mental or physical health emergency.
SROs are NOT involved in any discipline actions by the school district. Discipline is only handled by our principals and school leaders employed by the district. They are important in helping with investigations to make sure that our schools are as safe and secure as possible. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the role of SROs in our schools, please don’t hesitate to contact me. Working as a community, we can prioritize the safety of our students and staff.

SCHOOL NURSE UPDATE
Ticks!
Warmer weather is finally here, and with the increased amount of time spent outside, there has also been an increase in the number of ticks we are finding on students at school. Please make it a habit to check your students regularly for ticks. If we find one, we'll notify you, remove the tick, and seal it in a bag for your child to take home so you can identify the species.
For more information on ticks, their removal, and a helpful fact sheet, follow this link from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
