School Newsletter Term 4, Week 3
Friday 27th October 2023
Kia ora West End Whānau,
It has been another great week of learning here at Te Kura O Urumutu. Puawaitanga hosted our Vibe Assembly on Thursday and it was wonderful to celebrate the learning that is happening at the moment.
On Thursday 2 November, we will be hosting a Whānau Fun Evening, where acclaimed cyber safety/online expert, John Parsons, will be speaking with whānau. Many of you may have heard of John before and/or heard his amazing messages about understanding, supporting and navigating the online world with our tamariki. He is a must hear and we encourage as many whānau as possible to come along to listen to John’s talk.
John’s presentation to whānau will begin at 6.00pm and while he’s talking with whānau - we’ll keep tamariki entertained with a creche in Room 1 and Room 2.
During the day, John will also be speaking with all our tamariki about online safety. He will have timetabled sessions with our juniors, middles and seniors, where his messages will be age appropriate for our tamariki about how to keep safe online. Our children are born into a world surrounded by social media and online content and we value John’s expert advice to share with us how best to support our tamariki.
We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible next Thursday evening at 6pm.
It was great to see a group of parents make the time to attend Term 4 “Chatter and Chocolate” Consultation with our Board to support planning for the future of our school. One of the topics we discussed was any areas that the board could consider for funding in 2024. If you have an idea that you would like to share please click on the link and record your idea.
We are very excited to host our annual Athletics Sports on Wednesday 1 November (weather allowing). We love seeing our tamariki showing whakamana and Mana Aotūroa as they take on the challenge of each event. Thank you to Miss Black for her planning and efforts to ensure the day runs smoothly. We hope to see a lot of West End Whānau there!
To all of our West End Whānau I wish you a safe and happy weekend.
Ngā mihi nui,

School Athletics
We are excited to be hosting a whole school athletics on the 1st of November. Puawaitanga and Te Wao Nui O Tāne will out on the field from 9:00am, with Tipuranga joining us after morning tea, at about 11am. We invite all whanau to come and watch. School Athletics runs six different disciplines across the run, jump and throw skill sets which enable all of our students to act on their school values. In the afternoon, we will host finals for sprints, 800m and class vs class relays. If you have any questions regarding sports at West End please contact gblack@westend.school.nz
Sports Draws
Each week all sporting code fixtures are released on the school app. Please ensure you have the sporting tab selected that is appropriate for your children.
World Cup Rippa Rugby
44 teams from local primary schools and intermediates took part in Manawatū Rugby’s Rippa World Cup at Bill Brown Park on 20 October.
The tournament was held to coincide with the Men’s Rugby World Cup and to encourage wider participation in rugby. Each team was assigned a 2023 Rugby World Cup country and were encouraged to dress up in outfits that represented that country.
17 schools from the Manawatū, Tararua, and Rangitikei entered teams. The tournament was split into two grades — Years 5 and 6, and Years 7 and 8.
Manawatū Rugby ran the tournament for girls last year to coincide with the Women’s Rugby World Cup.
After such a strong turnout this year, Manawatū Rugby is making the Rippa World Cup an annual event.
Rippa is the form of rugby that tamariki aged under seven play in the Manawatū junior club competition.
Manawatū Rugby Game Development and Operations Manager Shaun Eade says it was great to see so many teams take part, as the key purposes of the tournament was to encourage participation and introduce new kids to rugby.
“For many of these kids, it would have been the first Rippa tournament that they have played in, so hopefully they enjoyed it so much that they’ll now register to play rippa or rugby for a club next season.”
Parents who would like to register their children to play rugby in 2024 can find junior club contacts here or contact Matt Booth at mattb@manawaturugby.co.nz.
